Lisbon, Portugal (My Sportsbook) - Real Madrid star Luis Figo will return to the Portuguese national team for World Cup qualifiers next month. The 32-year-old Figo announced his retirement from international play following Euro 2004 last summer. But the skilled winger left open the possibility to return, an option he obviously explored before being named to Luiz Felipe Scolari's for qualifiers against Slovakia and Estonia in early June. "I always thought Luis would make himself available for selection again," said Portuguese Football Federation chairman Gilberto Madail. "He's a giant of Portuguese football and I'm delighted he's back." Figo has already made 110 appearances for Portugal, which made it to the final of Euro 2004 before losing to Greece. He is also third on the Portuguese scoring list with 31 goals. He made his senior national team debut back in 1991, after leading Portugal's Under-20 team to a victory in the world championships. Figo was part of the 'Golden Generation' of Portuguese football, which was supposed to capture numerous major trophies. Despite some extensive success, Figo and Portugal were never able to live up to the lofty expectations. They did advance to the final of Euro 2004, the semifinals of Euro 2000 and the quarterfinals of Euro '96 during their run with the squad. Now, it appears Figo will have one last chance to win a major championship at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
