Fort Worth, TX (My Sportsbook) - Greg Biffle easily drove the No.16 Post-It Ford to victory in the Samsung/Radio Shack 500 Nextel Cup race at the Texas Motor Speedway. The Roush Racing driver crossed the finish line 3.244 seconds ahead of runner-up Jamie McMurray.
The Vancouver, WA native used the same chassis that he won the February race at the California Speedway to collect his second win of the season and fifth of his "Cup" career.
The race began with a couple of quick cautions when Dave Blaney and Scott Riggs both lost control of their race cars in the first nine laps, but then the drivers settled down and got into a rhythm.
Jeremy Mayfield took the lead away from pole winner Ryan Newman on lap two. Mayfield's Evernham Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne, who started third, fell back in the first few laps but then made a charge and by lap 20 was right on his teammate's rear bumper.
The car on the move however, was Biffle. Starting at the back of the grid because of a Saturday practice crash that forced him into his backup car, the No.16 Ford amazingly grabbed the lead on 87.
"It's all the hard work from these guys," said Biffle points to his crew. "The Viagra team and the No.99 team and all the guys came over (to help setup the backup car). There were six different uniforms working on this race car yesterday and that means a lot to me."
He continued to dominate as they reached the halfway point of the 334-lap event, holding a 2.287-second margin over teammate Kurt Busch. In fact, Roush Racing had all five of its drivers in the top-10 at the mid-point.
When Kahne crashed on lap 271, the drivers came in for their pit stops with Biffle still in front, followed by Casey Mears, McMurray, Jimmie Johnson and Busch.
"We were having a great race...before we broke an oil pump shaft," said Kahne, who won Saturday's Busch Series event. "We could have run a top-five."
Twenty-nine laps after the race restarted, Biffle had built more than a second lead when Tony Stewart's engine exploded. That would make the race a 30-lap "shootout."
On the race's final stop, Mears took just two tires and came off pit lane in the lead with Biffle just behind.
"We figured that was the only way to win the race," said crew chief Jimmy Elledge. "The No.40 car did it earlier today and it looked like it was good for them.
But it was not to be for Mears who would still earn a career-best tying 4th- place finish.
With 24 laps remaining Biffle powered underneath Mears to take over the lead for the seventh and final time on the afternoon. He easily pulled away from Mears who was then passed by his Chip Ganassi teammate McMurray.
Biffle built his lead to over four seconds and held it there until the final lap when he put it on cruise control to the checkered flag.
"This car was awesome and the guys in our pits, just look at the stops today," said a happy Biffle. "We lost our 'good' car and had to bring our backup out which just goes to show all the hard work these guys have put in."
Johnson moved past Mears for third place and Sterling Marlin completed the top-five.
"The last couple of weeks we haven't started the race like we needed to, but my crew guys have worked hard in the pits and Chad Knaus has made some "evil" calls to get this thing turned around and pull this finish off.
"I wish we could have had the victory, but the No.16 had everybody covered today."
Michael Waltrip (sixth) and Dale Earnhardt Jr. (ninth) combined for a pair of top-10 results, the first time they both finished in the top-10 since September 2004 in New Hampshire.
Last week's winner Jeff Gordon could never find the right setup and finished 15th.
Johnson remains the points leader, though Biffle's win and race-high 219 laps led cut the margin to 135 points (1,142-1,007). Rusty Wallace (905) jumped four places to third overall. Busch (897) and Jeff Gordon (895) also moved up and into the top-five after seven of 36 events.
The next race on the Nextel Cup schedule is a Saturday night affair at the Phoenix International Raceway on April 23rd.
