San Jose, CA (My Sportsbook) - San Jose State has named Tom Bowen its new athletic director. Bowen, a Bay Area native, had been the director of community affairs for the NFL's San Francisco 49ers and directed all of the team's fund-raising activities. He has also served in athletic administration at the University of California, St. Mary's-CA College and De La Salle High School in Concord, California. "Tom brings important and valued experience to us," said San Jose State interim president Don W. Kassing. "His administrative and fund-raising skills will be essential components to be competitive in the WAC and to make our athletic program a visible and an important part of the university's efforts to be distinctive." Former 49ers head coach Bill Walsh, a San Jose State graduate, led the search committee. Bowen was an associate athletic director at California from July 2000 through September 2002. "San Jose State is a wonderful university academically and athletically and I wanted to be a part of it. This is an opportunity to come to a university that has a long-standing tradition of excellence," said Bowen, who accepted a four- year contract agreement with the university. Bowen replaces Chuck Bell, who resigned last month after 6 1/2 years on the job.
