Baton Rouge, LA (My Sportsbook) - LSU head coach Nick Saban met with
Miami Dolphins officials on Tuesday to discuss the NFL team's head coaching position.
"I owe it to the people of Louisiana and the fans of LSU football to let them know I have had a preliminary conversation with the Dolphins to exchange ideas about their head coaching position," Saban said in a statement released Wednesday. "No decisions were made in this meeting and they will continue their search for a coach. I will continue to be committed to LSU, our football program and totally focused on our bowl game versus Iowa."
Saban led LSU to a share of the 2003 national championship and this season guided the Tigers to a record of 9-2 and a berth in the Capital One Bowl.
The Dolphins, meanwhile, are on the way to their worst season in franchise history. Miami is just 2-11, already matching a team record for losses set during the club's 3-11 expansion campaign of 1966.
Dave Wannstedt resigned as Dolphins head coach on November 9 after a 1-8 start. Jim Bates has led Miami to a record of 1-3 as interim coach.
Saban has had flirtations with NFL teams in the past, including a meeting last season with the Chicago Bears.
"We are all aware that other NFL teams have made overtures to him in the past and he hasn't expressed any interest," said LSU athletic director Skip Bertman. "But this is one of the premier jobs in the NFL and he owes it to his family and their future to hear what the Dolphins have to say."
Saban took over an LSU program that was 3-8 in 1999 and guided the Tigers to an 8-4 mark with a Peach Bowl victory in 2000. He has a record of 48-15 in five seasons with the school and last season's national championship triggered a clause in his contract that made him the highest-paid coach in college football.
"Nick Saban has revolutionized LSU football and he has energized the state of Louisiana, and we hope he will be our coach for a long time," Bertman added. "But he has been forthright in his communication with the university about this and I support him in any direction that he may take."
Saban has NFL experience as an assistant coach with the then-Houston Oilers in 1988 and '89 and as defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns from 1991-94.
His first collegiate head coaching job was a one-year stint at Toledo in 1990 and he spent five years at Michigan State from 1995-99 before taking over at LSU. In 11 years, he has a career record of 91-41-1.
