Buenos Aires, Argentina (My Sportsbook) - Despite a 2-0 loss at Independiente Sunday, Newell's Old Boys captured the 2004 Argentine Apertura. Newell's finished the 19-game season with 36 points, two ahead of second-place Velez Sarsfield. Velez had a chance to force a playoff, but were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Arsenal. Goal differential is not used to determine the champion. The title is Newell's fifth in club history, but first since 1992. River Plate earned third place with 33 points, while traditional power Boca Juniors struggled to an eighth place finish.
