South Bend, IN (My Sportsbook) - The University of Notre Dame has named New England Patriots assistant Charlie Weis its 28th football coach. Weis, who will the fired Tyrone Willingham, will be introduced at a press conference Monday at 11 a.m. (et). Weis, the offensive coordinator under Bill Belichick the past five years, received a six-year contract reportedly worth $2 million per season. Weis graduated from Notre Dame in 1978, but did not play for the football team. He will be the first alum to coach in South Bend since Hugh Devore in 1963. Both Weis and former Irish quarterback and current Bills offensive coordinator Tom Clements were interviewed for the position. Willingham was fired amid plenty of controversy, dismissed after three seasons and a 21-15 overall record at the helm. With two years left on his contract, he was the first Notre Dame coach to be fired before his deal was up. Willingham will be introduced as the head coach at the University of Washington Monday. Defensive coordinator Kent Baer will coach Notre Dame against Oregon State in the Insight Bowl on December 28.
