Pittsburgh, PA (My Sportsbook) - The
Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly ironed out a trade to send veteran catcher Jason Kendall to the
Oakland Athletics for pitchers Mark Redman and Arthur Rhodes.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette quoted a high level source as saying the deal was done, but the A's players had to pass their physicals.
The 30-year-old Kendall, a three-time All-Star, has spent all nine seasons of his major league career in Pittsburgh. He batted .319 with three homers and 51 RBI last season. Kendall, who has three years left on his contract with the Pirates, is a career .306 hitter. He is the franchise's all-time leader in games caught.
Kendall has a no-trade clause in his current contract with the Pirates, but reportedly would waive it to play for the A's. The Post-Gazette reports Kendall has $34 million left on his deal with the Pirates.
Redman, a 30-year-old lefthander, went 11-12 with a 4.71 ERA in 32 starts last season for the A's. This would mark a return to the National League for Redman, who was part of Florida's rotation in 2003. He has also pitched for Minnesota and Detroit since breaking into the majors in 1999 and is 48-51 lifetime with a 4.37 ERA.
Rhodes, also a southpaw, had nine saves in 37 appearances last season for the Athletics. The 35-year-old went 3-3 with a 5.12 ERA. During his 14-year major league career, Rhodes is 72-54 with 26 saves and a 4.36 ERA. He has also pitched for Baltimore and Seattle.
The Pirates made a small trade on Wednesday, acquiring minor league outfielder Antonio Sucre from the Washington Nationals in exchange for outfielder J.J. Davis.
