San Diego, CA (My Sportsbook) - The San Diego Chargers claimed kicker James Tuthill off waivers from the Washington Redskins on Tuesday. Tuthill replaces Wade Richey, who was waived on Monday by the Chargers. Tuthill spent 11 weeks of the 2002 season with the Redskins. He connected on 10-of-16 field goal attempts, including a 53-yarder. Tuthill also made 20- of-21 extra-point attempts for Washington. The Chargers will be Tuthill's fifth team since he entered the NFL as a rookie free agent in 2000. Richey, who was signed by the Chargers before the 2001 season, lost his job as the field goal kicker to Steve Christie late last season, but was still being used on kickoffs. The Chargers won 30-27 in overtime against Denver on Sunday, but Richey had a kickoff that went to the sidelines and gave the Broncos the ball at the 40- yard line. They scored three plays later to cut their deficit to 21-17. San Diego also announced Tuesday that defensive end Al Fontenot has been waived from the reserve-injured list.
