Tilburg, the Netherlands (My Sportsbook) - After an embarrassing 2-1 Champions League loss at Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Wednesday, Ajax needs a win at Willem II on Sunday to restore its confidence.
The win by Tel-Aviv provided the club with its first-ever Champions League goals, points, and win. The loss leaves Ajax with just three points through four group stage matches, and dangerously close to being eliminated from the competition.
The Dutch giants are also having unexpected trouble domestically, sitting in fifth place with 18 points from 10 matches. But Ronald Koeman's team beat NEC 1-0 in its last Eredivisie match, while rivals PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord stumbled.
Willem II is just one point back of Ajax with 17 points, and has been especially strong at home. Willem has won four of its five home matches, with the only loss coming against Feyenoord.
PSV Eindhoven won its midweek Champions League encounter, 1-0, against Rosenborg. United States international DaMarcus Beasley scored the game-winner in the 10th minute.
PSV got more good news this week when the Disciplinary Board of the Royal Dutch Football Association decided the club would be awarded three points for the abandoned match at Den Haag on October 16.
PSV was leading 2-0 in the 80th minute when the referee decided to abandon the match due to fan abuse. PSV will not have to travel to Den Haag to play the last 10 minutes, and the 2-0 score will stand. PSV now leads the Eredivisie with 26 points from 10 matches.
The Eindhoven club will try not to look past Sunday's opponent Den Bosch, which is near the bottom of the table with eight points from 10 matches.
"Den Bosch away is an ordinary league game," said PSV coach Guus Hiddink. "We've left the Champions League behind us for the time being and we'll have to do a job on Sunday."
Defender Andre Ooijer could make his return from a hamstring injury, but full- back Wilfred Bouma is out after picking up a knock against Rosenborg.
Feyenoord, currently in second place in the Eredivisie, hosts NAC Breda on Sunday. Feyenoord is coming off a 1-1 UEFA Cup draw in Hungary against Ferencvaros on Thursday, but lost its last domestic match to AZ Alkmaar, 4-1.
"The team is playing better and better, but has now also learned that the little things decide matches at this level. That is only good for this team," said Feyenoord coach Ruud Gullit after the Ferencvaros draw.
