Eindhoven, the Netherlands (My Sportsbook) - The winners of 18 of the last 20 Eredivisie championships will meet Sunday when PSV Eindhoven hosts arch-rival Ajax.
Both teams are in familiar positions near the top of the table, but Ajax needs the points more as they are already four points behind PSV. Additionally, PSV is expected to have three more points added to its league-leading total as a result of an abandoned match at Den Haag last weekend. Eindhoven was leading 2-0 in the 80th minute when referee Rene Temmink called the match due to fan abuse.
"Before us is quite an important match," said Ajax coach Ronald Koeman. "I do not want to forfeit PSV so many points."
Both teams are coming off strong mid-week performances in the Champions League, as Ajax throttled Maccabi Tel-Aviv, 3-0, and PSV beat Rosenborg, 2-1. PSV leads its group while Ajax is third in Group C.
Ajax faced some controversy this week when technical director Louis van Gaal resigned Tuesday as rumors swirled about a rocky relationship with Koeman.
"Anyone who knows me, knows I prefer clarity," said van Gaal. "Compromises do not go well with my character and I foresee more differences of opinion in the future. That's why I have decided to vacate the position. I hope I serve Ajax's best interest this way. I had hoped to grow old at Ajax, but it has turned out differently."
Last season, PSV and Ajax played to a heated 2-2 draw at Phillips Stadium. PSV boss Guus Hiddink is trying not to put too much emphasis on Sunday's clash.
"We realize that a victory would mean a 10-point cushion over Ajax," said Hiddink. "However, I don't feel the result is decisive for the title. The last time we won the Dutch title, we also had created a 10-point gap, but due to certain reasons, we could not maintain that gap."
PSV's Brazilian defender Alex is questionable for Sunday's match with a foot injury. He missed the win over Rosenborg on Wednesday. Ajax will also still be without midfielder Tomas Galacek for the match due to a lingering back injury.
In other Eredivisie action this weekend, second place Feyenoord host Waalwijk. Fatigue could be a factor as Feyenoord is coming off an impressive 3-0 UEFA Cup win over Hearts on Thursday.
