The provisional pole win earned the Frenchman one championship points and a guaranteed position on the front row. Paul Tracy (1:34.557), Mario Dominguez (1:34.601), Oriol Servia (1:34.715) and Jimmy Vasser (1:34.913) completed the top-five. The qualifying record for the 2.795-mile temporary street course is one minutes, 30.936 seconds set in October 2001 by Cristiano da Matta. In the battle for Newman/Haas team supremacy (and the championship), Bourdais holds the edge over Bruno Junqueira. Bourdais owns a 28-point lead over Junqueira (308-280) and has collected six road-course wins in 10 road course starts. Junqueira did not make an appearance in the session until there were seven minutes left and was 17th quickest in the field when the session ended due to a Patrick Carpentier crash.
