Las Vegas, NV (My Sportsbook) - Sebastien Bourdais captured the Bridgestone 400 Champ Car race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but only by a matter of a few feet.
The No.2 Newman/Haas driver crossed the finish line just 0.066 seconds ahead of teammate Bruno Junqueira. The finish was the sixth-closest finish in the Champ Car's modern era (1979-present).
The victory was Bourdais' sixth of the season and ninth of his Champ Car career. He led a race-high 99 of the 166 laps.
It was even closer than the final numbers indicate. Over the final 40 laps Bourdais and Junqueira were never more than half-a-second apart. As the laps dwindled, Junqueira put more and more pressure on his teammate.
With just 20 laps remaining, Junqueira pulled up on the outside of the Frenchman, who was hugging the bottom of the track. They continued side-by- side for many laps until they came up on some slower cars. Bourdais was able to slice through the backmarkers more easily than Junqueira and opened up a slight lead.
Junqueira made one more charge as the two Newman/Haas teammates came up on another slower car, but Bourdais slid up in front of his teammate and Junqueira could never make another run at the win.
"I had the inside line which was the fastest way around," said Bourdais. "Bruno had to go around me. We were pretty close at times."
Patrick Carpentier, Rodolfo Lavin and Jimmy Vasser completed the top-five.
Bourdais now owns a 27-point lead of Junqueira with just two races remaining on the schedule (307-280). Carpentier (241) jumped past Paul Tracy into third place, 66 points behind the leader.
The next race in the championship is the Lexmark Indy 300 in Surfers Paradise, Australia on October 24th.
