Loudon, VA (My Sportsbook) - Travis Kvapil captured the rain-delayed Sylvania 200 at the New Hampshire International Speedway. With sunlight fading, the No.24 Toyota driver crossed the finish line about two lengths ahead of runner- up Jack Sprague while under caution.
The victory was Kvapil's second of the season and fifth of his Craftsman career.
Following an almost four-hour rain delay, the race got underway with 35 caution laps. Finally the green flag dropped and the drivers began racing for real. Sprague, the pole winner, led 23 more laps until he was passed for the lead.
At the halfway point of the 200-lap event, Shane Hmiel held the lead by 0.952 seconds over Mike Skinner.
Meanwhile, series points leader Bobby Hamilton charged from his 23rd starting position to fifth place. The No.4 Dodge continued to challenge the fastest trucks and on lap 112 was racing Hmiel for the lead.
Following another caution, Hamilton stayed out to lead a lap before coming in for his final stop. On the restart from 29th place, Hamilton was called for jumping the start and was given the black flag, putting him further behind the leaders and essential out of the race.
Nextel Cup driver Jamie McMurray took the lead on lap 137 when Steve Park, the leader, pitted for fuel and tires. McMurray stayed on the track as he had last stopped around lap 100.
McMurray's No.2 Dodge stayed on the lead until challenged by Kvapil. The two traded the lead back and forth until Kvapil made the decisive pass with 11 laps remaining. He expanded his lead to over a second on McMurray and Hmiel.
With just four laps remaining, first McMurray, then Hmiel ran out of fuel. As Kvapil had stopped on the same lap as the other two, he was worried about making to the checkered flag.
Then Bill Lester and Bobby Dotter crashed with two laps to go and it was unlikely that Kvapil could make the additional laps needed for a green-white- checker finish, but NASCAR declared that it was too dark to race safely and out came the checkered flag.
Johnny Benson, Carl Edwards and David Reutimann completed the top-five.
Hamilton rebounded to finish 15 and maintain the championship lead, 30 ahead of Dennis Setzer, who finished sixth (2,623-2,593). Edwards remained in third place just 39 points behind Hamilton.
The next race in the championship is at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 25th.
