New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Running back Curtis Martin of the
New York Jets, defensive end Kenard Lang of the
Cleveland Browns and punter-kicker Micah Knorr of the
Denver Broncos were named AFC Players of the Week for games played the first week of the 2004 season.
Martin earned offensive honors after rushing for 196 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries during New York's 31-24 victory over the Bengals. Martin also caught a TD pass. He needs nine yards to surpass Freeman McNeil as the Jets' all-time leading rusher.
Lang was named the Defensive Player of the Week. He matched a career-high with three sacks and also had two quarterback pressures and a forced fumble during Cleveland's 20-3 triumph over the Ravens.
Knorr earned the Special Teams Player of the Week award after six of his kickoffs resulted in touchbacks. He also punted twice for a 56.5 average with a long of 66 and one inside the 20-yard line, helping Denver to a 34-24 victory over the Chiefs.
Other nominees for AFC Offensive Player of the Week were New England quarterback Tom Brady, San Diego quarterback Drew Brees, Denver running back Quentin Griffin, Kansas City running back Priest Holmes, Buffalo wide receiver Eric Moulds and Pittsburgh running back Duce Staley.
Also considered for the defensive honor were Denver cornerback Champ Bailey, Kansas City linebacker Shawn Barber, New England linebacker Tedy Bruschi, Jets linebacker Sam Cowart, Buffalo linebacker London Fletcher and Pittsburgh linebacker Clark Haggans.
Cleveland punter Derrick Frost, New England special teamer Larry Izzo, San Diego rookie kicker Nate Kaeding, Buffalo punter Brian Moorman, Pittsburgh kicker Jeff Reed and Kansas City kicker Lawrence Tynes were also nominated for the special teams award.
