(My Sportsbook) - Terrell Owens said he would make a bigger impact than any other offseason acquisition this year and after his performance for the
Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday's season opener it would be hard to argue with him.
Owens hauled in eight passes for 68 yards and tied a career high with three touchdown receptions in the Eagles' 31-17 win over the New York Giants. The three TD catches were just two less than the combined number of touchdown receptions by all of Philadelphia's wide receivers last season. The Pro Bowl wideout arrived from San Francisco via free agency in the offseason.
Donovan McNabb had one of the best games of his career, as he threw four touchdown passes and completed 26-of-36 tosses for 330 yards. McNabb registered his sixth career 300-yard passing game and tied his career-high with the four TD heaves.
Defensive end Jevon Kearse also made his debut for Philadelphia and recovered a fumble. The entire defensive line did an excellent job for the Eagles, as they compiled five sacks.
L.J. Smith added a reception for a touchdown for the Eagles, who snapped a three-year opening day losing streak and beat the Giants for the sixth time in the last seven meetings. Brian Westbrook rushed 17 times for 119 yards in the win.
"The more times you give it to him (Westbrook) the more yards he's going to get," said Eagles coach Andy Reid. "He's a pretty good football player. It's that simple."
However, Reid had little reason to be impressed with his defense. The Eagles surrendered 413 yards to the Giants, including 243 yards through the air.
A big chunk of New York's offense came when Tiki Barber raced 72 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter with the game already out of reach. Barber finished with 125 yards on just nine carries.
The most unfortunate news of the day came via an injury, as starting offensive lineman Shawn Andrews suffered a fractured right leg. Andrews, Philadelphia's No. 1 draft pick this year, will miss the rest of the season. He was the 16th overall pick of the draft and the second offensive lineman taken after Robert Gallery was picked second by Oakland. Artis Hicks will be expected to fill in for Andrews for the time being.
The Eagles will be at home again next week when they take on the Minnesota Vikings in a Monday night battle. Philadelphia has won four of the last matchups with the Vikings, including a 48-17 thrashing the time the teams during the 2001 campaign. The Eagles dropped their first seven all-time meetings with the Vikes, but since then have posted a 7-4 record against Minnesota.
