Flushing Meadows, NY (My Sportsbook) - Two-time champion Serena Williams straight-setted fellow American Lindsay Lee-Waters 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday to reach the third round at the U.S. Open. Second-seeded French star Amelie Mauresmo joined Williams in the round of 32 with a three-set victory.

Serena handled Lee-Waters in 59 minutes at Ashe Stadium, with the help of 29 winners, including eight big aces. The 27-year-old Lee-Waters was the only mother in the women's draw.

The third-seeded Serena, who titled here in 1999 and 2002 and was the runner- up to her sister Venus in 2001, missed the 2003 Open while recovering from knee surgery. She's now a brilliant 28-3 lifetime at Flushing Meadows.

Up next for the 22-year-old Serena will be 30th-seeded Tatiana Golovin of France. The 16-year-old Golovin grounded Japanese Akiko Morigami 6-4, 6-4 in second-round action on Day 3 of the fortnight.

Mauresmo started off slow against the Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko before charging back for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision at Armstrong Stadium. Vakulenko requested medical attention to address an apparent foot injury while trailing 1-4 in the final set.

Mauresmo, a 2002 U.S. Open semifinalist, needed 1 hour, 24 minutes to advance, which she did despite piling up 10 double faults.

Up next for Mauresmo will be 31st-seeded Venezuelan Maria Vento-Kabchi, a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 winner against German Julia Schruff.

Seeded Russians Elena Dementieva and Vera Zvonareva joined the parade into round three, as the No. 6 Dementieva dumped France's Severine Beltrame 6-3, 6-2 and the No. 10 Zvonareva zipped past Belgian Els Callens 6-3, 6-3. Dementieva was June's French Open runner-up to her fellow Russian Anastasia Myskina.

Twelfth-seeded Japanese Ai Sugiyama erased Argentine Gisela Dulko 6-2, 6-4, while 15th-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder whipped Czech Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-1.

Resurgent Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova reached the third round with a 6-4, 6-3 upset against 17th-seeded Olympic bronze medalist Alicia Molik of Australia.
