Flushing Meadows, NY (My Sportsbook) - Amelie Mauresmo and Serena Williams each coasted in their first-round matches during Monday's opening day of the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Mauresmo had little trouble in a 6-4, 6-2 victory over American Marissa Irvin. The Frenchwoman fired up 25 winners, including seven aces, and converted each of her four break-point chances in the one-hour, 13- minute match.

Williams, seeded third, overwhelmed Czech Sandra Kleinova 6-1, 6-3. The two- time Open champion had 35 winners, seven aces and was taken to break point just once during the match.

Mauresmo has three titles this year and is coming off a silver medal at the Olympic Games. She won a hardcourt tournament in Canada earlier this month, but has not made it past the semifinals in her five previous U.S. Open appearances.

Eighth-seeded Jennifer Capriati was not as impressive in her first-round encounter with Denisa Chladkova. Capriati dropped the first set by a 6-2 count before winning the next two by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Sixth-seeded Elena Dementieva also lost her opening set against Dinara Safina before posting a comeback win, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Other winners Monday included 10th-seeded Vera Zvonareva, who posted a 6-1, 6-1 rout of Henrieta Nagyova, 12th-seeded Ai Sugiyama, a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Teryn Ashley.

The only seeded players to fall on Monday were No. 18 Karolina Sprem, who was upended in three sets by fellow Croat Jelena Kostanic, and No. 32 Meghan Shaugnessy, a 6-4, 6-4 loser to Marion Bartoli.

Patty Schnyder, Francesca Schiavone, Alicia Molik, Magdalena Maleeva, Fabiola Zuluaga, Nathalie Dechy, Tatiana Golovin and Maria Vento-Kabchi were other seeded winners on Monday.

Top-seeded and defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, French Open champ Anastasia Myskina, Wimbledon winner Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams will be among those taking the court as the first round continues Tuesday.
