GASSNER PICKS UP 15TH WIN
Dave Gassner won his league leading fifteenth win with a 3-0 shutout of the Ottawa Lynx in International League action Sunday afternoon. Gassner threw seven shutout innings and allowing three hits and one walk while striking out four. Gassner's record improves to 15-8. Offensively Rochester received RBI singles from Luis Rodriguez, Terry Tiffee, and Michael Ryan. Michael Restovich went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. For Ottawa Eddy Garabito went 2- for-3 with a double and a triple. Rick Bauer took the loss to drop his record to 2-5. He pitched 7 2/3rds innings and allowed three earned runs. He gave up seven hits and struck out four.
X-MAN
Xavier Nady went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBI to lead the Portland Beavers to 7-0 victory over the Tacoma Rainiers. Nady homered in the top of the fifth inning and later drove in two runs with an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning. Kerry Robinson homered to lead off the game and ended up going 3- for-5 with a double and and scored two runs. Ramon Vazques went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Beavers. Robert Fick and Yamid Haad each went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Jeremy Reed and Pat Borders both went 2-for-4 for the Rainiers. Chris Oxspring pitched well throwing seven shutout innings and allowing seven hits and two walks. He struck out five batters. His record improved to 6-4. Gustavo Martinez took the loss for Tacoma pitching five innings and allowing seven earned runs. He allowed thirteen hits and two walks. He struck out four batters. His record fell to 5-7.
KETCHNER SHUTS DOOR ON BISCUITS
Ryan Ketchner shut out the Montgomery Biscuits for six innings to lead the Jacksonville Suns to A 5-0 victory in Southern League action Sunday night. Ketchner gave up five hits and walked two, while striking out four to improve his record to 8-7. Nelson Castro homered and drove in two runs to supply the bulk of Jacksonville's offense. Shane Victorino homered and had two hits. For Montgomery Chairon Isenia went 2-for 4. Matt Parker took the loss for Montgomery giving up four earned runs over six innings. He allowed five hits and walked five while striking out three. His record falls to 1-6.
MISSIONS HOMER HAPPY
Jaime Bubela homered and drove in two runs to lead the San Antonio Missions to a 4-0 victory over the Wichita Wranglers in Texas League action Sunday night. San Antonio was homer happy Sunday scroing all of their runs on home runs in the first inning. Dustin Delucchi lead off the game with a solo shot and was followed by homers from John Lindsey and Jamie Bubela. TJ Bohn went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Missions. Phil Devey was in control for the entire game shutting out the Wranglers for seven innings. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out five. His record improved to 2-5. Tim Bausher took the loss for Wichita pitching six innings and giving up four earned runs. He allowed seven hits and walked none. He struck out four batters. His record dropped to 4-7.
EXTRA'S ANYONE?
Gary Schneidmiller drove in the game winning run in the top of the fifteenth inning to lead the Portland Sea Dogs to a 10-9 victory over the Norwich Navigators Sunday afternoon. Portland had tied the score in the top of the eighth inning on a fielder's choice by Mike Lockwood. Sheldon Fuse went 5-for-8 with 3 triples, 3 runs scored, and two RBI. Gary Schneidmiller went 3-for-6 with three RBI. Mike Lopez hit the game's only homer and drove in two runs. For Carlos Valderrama went 4-for-8 with three runs scored, a double, and a triple. Doug Clark went 3-for-7 with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI. Derin McMains went 2-for-7 with two RBI. Chris Curry went 3-for-7 with an RBI. Bo Donaldson got the win pitching three innings and three innings of scoreless relief and allowing only one hit while striking out two. Donaldson improves to 3-3 for the season. Marc Deschenes earned the save with a perfect scoreless bottom of the fifteenth. It was his ninth save of the season. Joe Bateman took the loss to drop to 1-3 for the season. He pitched three innings and gave up one earned run.
JARROD SHINES IN PCL SHOOTOUT
Jarrod Patterson belted two home runs and drove in six runs as the Omaha Royals out slugged the Iowa Cubs, 12-8 in a Pacific Coast League contest. Patterson didn't waste any time either as he delivered a grand slam in the first inning to help the Royals to a 5-0 advantage. Russ Johnson helped the Cubs battle back to tie the game at five in the fifth when he lifted a three-run shot to cap a four-run frame. Omaha's Dee Brown broke the tie in the bottom half of the fifth when he drilled another grand slam for the Royals. Patterson capped his day at the plate with a two-run home run in the seventh to close the scoring for Omaha. Jason Dubois also homered for the Cubs and knocked in three in the effort. Jason Dickson earned the win for Omaha in five innings of work. He yielded five earned runs, seven hits, walked one, and struck out one as he improved to 4-5. Scott Randall picked up his fourth save in the win. Iowa's Renyel Pinto was shelled in just 4 1/3rd innings. He was knocked around for seven earned runs on four hits and five walks. Pinto is 0-1 on the year.
CUMMINGS OWNS THE THIRD
Jason Standridge threw seven solid innings to record his eighth victory of the year and Midre Cummings had a pair of homers as the Durham Bulls rolled the Norfolk Tides, 12-3 in a Sunday matinee. Strandridge allowed three runs, one earned on seven hits, struck out five and walked two improving his record to 8-4 on the season. Cummings who leads the team in long balls this season, hit number 25 and 26 in the third inning. Cummings finished the night 2-for-4 with five RBI. Randy Keisler (6-7) was tagged with the loss for the Tides. Keisler went 2 2/3rd innings giving up all twelve of the Bulls runs, ten of them earned on twelve hits, striking out and walking two. Luis Ordaz also contributed in the win with a 3-for4 performance at the plate also driving in three RBI.
KITCHENETTE MAN - HOWARD DRILLS HIS 46TH
Jim Rushford hit two home runs and Clay Condrey picked up his ninth win of the season as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons trounced the Pawtucket Red Sox, 13-5. Ryan Howard went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, Budzinski went 3- for-4 with two RBI and Rushford knocked in five runs for the Red Barons. Condrey (9-8) allowed two runs, one earned in seven innings pitched. He allowed six hits and two walks while striking four batters. Tim Kester (12-10) got lit up allowing ten runs on nine hits in only 3 2/3rd innings. Adam Hyzdu and Jese Medrano each knocked in two runs for the Red Sox in the losing effort.
