Saratoga Springs, NY (My Sportsbook) - The thoroughbred racing world was all set for a coronation on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course as leading three- year-old filly Ashado was the odds-on favorite for the $750,000 Alabama Stakes. However, no one told trainer Allen Jerkens. Jerkens sent out Society Selection in the 1 1/4 mile race on a sloppy track and the filly did not disappoint. She already posted a win on a wet track three weeks ago at Saratoga when she won the Test Stakes and Society Selection proved again that she can run on a sloppy surface. Society Selection came from off the pace to post a 2 1/2 length victory in the final leg of New York's Triple Tiara. Mother Goose Stakes winner Stellar Jayne finished second and Ashado could do no better than third in the eight-horse field. Delaware Oaks and Black-Eyed Susan winner Yearly Report faded to fourth. The time for the Alabama Stakes was 2:02.70. The first two races of the Triple Tiara saw a split between Stellar Jayne and Ashado, who won the Coaching Club American Oaks. Society Selection did not run in the Coaching Club and was only sixth in the Mother Goose. Society Selection was ridden for the first time by Cornelio Velasquez for owners Majorie Cowan and Irving Cowan. The filly collected $450,000 for the win to boost her earnings to just under $800,000 for the year. In her career, Society Selection has won five of ten starts for more than $1.1 million. Earlier this year she also won the Comely Stakes and was second in the Acorn Stakes. Society Selection returned $13.40, $6.30 and $2.70. Stellar Jayne paid $8.70 and $2.80, and Ashado paid $2.10 for show.
