Anaheim, CA (My Sportsbook) - Da'Sean Butler had a game-high 26 points to go with six rebounds, as eighth-ranked West Virginia downed Portland, 84-66, in the championship game of the 76 Classic.

Butler was named the tournament's most outstanding player, while Kevin Jones added 17 points for the Mountaineers (5-0), who scored victories over Long Beach State and Texas A&M before beating Portland. Devin Ebanks scored 14 in the win.

Nik Raivio had 15 points to pace the Pilots (5-1), who had crushed UCLA in the first round before beating Minnesota in the semifinals. T.J. Campbell scored 12, while Kramer Knutson and Jared Stohl each had 11.

Luke Sikma grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Portland, but West Virginia won the overall rebounding battle, 41-29.

"I was hoping that they weren't going to be better in person than we saw on video, but they are really impressive," Portland head coach Eric Reveno said of West Virginia. "They are a tough team that gets in there and really battles for the ball and competes."

West Virginia started to take control with a 10-2 run late in the first half. Butler fueled the burst with eight points, including a pair of threes. The second of the long-distance shots capped the rally for a 31-20 WVU advantage with 4 1/2 minutes to play.

The Mountaineers ended the half with six consecutive points to take a 39-25 lead into the break, and they continued to roll in the second half.

Back-to-back layups from Butler and Darryl Bryant made it a 45-27 contest, and with 14 minutes to play, Butler followed two Wellington Smith foul shots with a jumper to expand the WVU lead to 51-32.

The Pilots made a comeback attempt with a 10-0 run down the stretch. Stohl had six points in the rally, which got Portland within 66-56 with 4:08 to go.

But the Mountaineers responded with five straight points. Ebanks' layup made it a 71-56 contest with 3:27 left, and WVU sealed the victory at the free throw line.

"If you asked us at the beginning of the tournament, we thought we would probably be playing Butler or Minnesota and I think on paper that's what everyone thought as well, but it didn't turn out that way," said WVU head coach Bob Huggins. "We were getting ready for those teams, but Portland is a really good team that runs their offense well so it was a great win against a good program."

Game Notes

Butler, Jones, and Campbell were named to the All-Tournament Team, along with Butler's Gordon Hayward and Long Beach State's T.J. Robinson...Bryant had nine points for WVU, while Smith had seven boards and six points.
