(My Sportsbook) - Despite reserve quarterback Marc Bulger's success, the
St. Louis Rams will send suddenly healthy signal-caller Kurt Warner on to the field this Sunday against the
Washington Redskins.
It hasn't been as easy a decision for head coach Mike Martz as it was originally supposed to be, considering Bulger has led the Rams to five consecutive wins and back into the playoff picture. Nonetheless, Martz has maintained that Warner is his starting signal-caller when healthy.
"He is ready to go, he is overdue, he is hungry to play," said Martz of Warner. "Physically, he is ready to play. It is the right thing to do."
Martz's decision was made a little bit easier due to Bulger's injured finger during Monday's 21-16 win over the Chicago Bears. Nonetheless, Warner is ready to get back into the starting lineup and build on the offense's success in recent weeks.
"When we are hitting on all cylinders we have the talent on this team to be very successful. We have shown that over three years. It is unfortunate that we started out the season not clicking for whatever reason," said Warner. "It is nice to see the team back that you expected to see coming in, the team that you have seen for three years, to finally be playing up to our potential."
Warner won't be the only key offensive weapon returning to lineup this week for the Rams, as All-Pro RB Marshall Faulk is listed as questionable after missing the Chicago game with a mild high ankle sprain. Faulk also has a strained tendon on the bottom of his left foot.
"I would imagine he'll be ready, but we can't say that for sure until we see him practice and he has a chance to test it," Martz said. "To draw any conclusions about where he is would be pretty hard right now."
Faulk, who has racked up 816 yards and eight touchdowns this year, needs just 62 yards to become the second player in history to record 5,000 rushing yards with two different teams.
With Warner and Faulk both on the field, the Rams should be able to maintain the recent production of the offense. Warner can't wait to get his chance to get back on the field this Sunday.
"I think I am just a little more excited now to know I am going to get some reps and I am going to get back in there and get my feel back and get my timing back and get in there and play football," said Warner. "It is what I love to do and what I have been waiting to do, so I am just excited this week about getting back in there and picking up on what I missed out on in the past seven weeks."
Warner's numbers weren't all that impressive early in the season, as he threw for just one touchdown and eight picks in three-plus contests. He must be better in this contest or Martz may start to second-guess himself about the change. Bulger had run the offense brilliantly in the interim, completing 65.3 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns and only four interceptions.
Expect Warner to look for Isaac Bruce early in this contest, as the wideout is just two catches from passing Henry Ellard (593) for the team record. Bruce has averaged 7.5 receptions per contest in four career games against the Redskins.
"It is an honor to play with a guy like Isaac for four years, but to see him accomplish something like that, especially early in his career, it is exciting," said Warner. "Obviously it would be an honor to throw it to him, but there have been a lot of guys along the way that have helped him accomplish that record from the quarterback slot."
Having another explosive wide receiver in Torry Holt on the other side of the offense has helped Bruce's production in recent years. Holt actually leads the team in receiving this season, hauling in 54 balls for 792 yards and two touchdowns.
It should be interesting to see if Washington CBs Champ Bailey and Fred Smoot are able to keep Bruce and Holt from making big plays.
COMING UP: St. Louis remains on the road for the second straight week against Philadelphia in Week 13.
