Ottawa, ON (My Sportsbook) - Pittsburgh Penguins Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux was named captain of Canada's World Cup team. The 2004 World Cup of Hockey will take place from August 30-September 14. Lemieux also served as captain of Canada's 2002 gold medal winning Olympic squad in Salt Lake City. "Mario is a great leader and we are very happy to again name him as the captain of Team Canada," said Wayne Gretzky, executive Director of Team Canada. Four other members of the 2002 Olympic team were named as alternate captains -- Joe Sakic and Adam Foote of the Colorado Avalanche, Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames and Scott Niedermayer of the New Jersey Devils. For each of Canada's games, only two alternate captains will wear a letter on their jersey and the four alternates will rotate each contest Canada plays in the tournament.
