Evansville, IN (My Sportsbook) - Shelvin Mack scored 17 points to help No. 11 Butler take a 64-60 win over Evansville at Roberts Stadium.

Gordon Hayward had 14 points and six rebounds while Willie Veasley added 11 and Matt Howard 10 for the Bulldogs (3-0), who have taken 11 of the last 12 games in the series.

Colt Ryan had 17 points while James Haarsma added 11 points and five rebounds for the Purple Aces (2-1), who were coming off lopsided wins over Oakland City and SIU-Edwardsville to start their season.

Evansville was trailing by 10 late in the game, but Ryan hit a three-pointer and, after two free throws from Zach Hahn, Ryan hit a jumper and a free throw to make it a 58-52 game with under a minute to play.

Hayward hit four straight free throws sandwiched around a Bryan Bouchie field goal to bump the Bulldogs' lead to 62-54.

Ryan, though, drained a three-pointer and, following a turnover by Hayward, put in another three pointer to make it a 62-60 game with 17 seconds left.

Mack made one-of-two at the other end for a three-point advantage and Ryan missed a three-point attempt at the other end, with Hayward coming down with the rebound, getting fouled and hitting one of his two free throws to seal the win.

The score was tight early on as, with the scoreboard showing a 4-4 game, neither team put any points up for over four minutes.

With the Purple Aces holding a 14-12 lead, Butler got the next seven points and a Mack three-pointer with just over seven minutes to play gave the team a 19-14 lead.

After 20 minutes of play, the Bulldogs went into the break with a 27-20 lead.

Evansville kept it close in the opening minutes of the second half, but Mack hit a three-pointer and a three-point play by Veasley made it a 35-24 game less than five minutes in.

The Purple Aces, though, responded with a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to 37-33 after a Pieter van Tongeren tip-in.

However, the Bulldogs were able to build on their lead and regained a double- digit lead as Veasley hit a three-pointer with under eight minutes to play for a 48-38 lead.

Game Notes

Evansville still holds a 60-55 advantage in the all-time series...Butler hosts Minnesota on Thursday...Evansville plays at Miami-Ohio next Saturday...Butler hit just 28 percent (14-of-50) of its shots while Evansville made 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the floor.
