Blackhawks seek sixth win in a row in visit to Edmonton

(My Sportsbook) - After getting a long road trip off to a rousing start, the Central Division-leading Chicago Blackhawks aim to continue their recent successful ways in tonight's encounter with the Edmonton Oilers from Rexall Place.

Chicago began its current six-game residency, necessitated by the United Center hosting a circus for an extended stay, with Thursday's 7-1 rout of the Calgary Flames. The lopsided victory followed four consecutive home wins that moved the Blackhawks to the top of the Central standings.

Kris Versteeg scored twice during a five-goal uprising for Chicago in the second period, while Patrick Kane registered a goal and an assist to help the Blackhawks snap a three-game road skid. Duncan Keith tallied three assists in the easy win, with goaltender Cristobal Huet turning aside 27-of-28 Calgary shots.

"A great game across the board," said Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville. "(I'm) really happy with all aspects and areas of our game. Everybody contributed; it was a very solid team effort tonight."

Kane has now notched a point in eight straight outings and has amassed four goals and seven assists during that span. The 2007 No. 1 overall pick leads Chicago with eight goals and 21 points so far this season.

The Blackhawks will be shooting for their first six-game win streak since the club ripped off nine victories in a row from December 7-28 of last year.

A return home helped the struggling Oilers get back on track on Wednesday, when the team rallied for three unanswered goals in the third period to come through with a 6-4 triumph over fellow Northwest Division member Colorado. Edmonton had lost four straight and 10 times in a 12-game span prior to that contest.

The Oilers' trailed by a 4-2 score before Sam Gagner stashed home a rebound off teammate Lubomir Visnovsky's shot with just 16 seconds left in the second period. Ryan Potulny scored on the power play early in the third to tie the score, and Patrick O'Sullivan delivered the eventual game-winner with 8:53 remaining in regulation.

"Anytime you can get a goal in the last minute it gives your team a boost, and we came out charging the next period," Gagner said. "We were just trying to continue to put some pressure on [Colorado] and we were able to come back and get the win."

Ales Hemsky capped the scoring with an empty-netter in the final minute and added an assist on the evening. The Edmonton forward has compiled two goals and four helpers during a five-game scoring streak.

The Oilers did play Wednesday's contest without center Mike Comrie and will likely be without him again tonight. The two-time 30-goal scorer has been diagnosed with mononucleosis and has missed six games this season due to illness.

Edmonton will play the second tilt of a five-game homestand this evening and owns a solid 7-3-1 mark as the host for the season.

These teams met in the Windy City back on October 14, with the Blackhawks coming on top of a 4-3 verdict. Chicago has taken four of the past five matchups between the clubs, including the last two held in Edmonton.
