St. Thomas, VI (My Sportsbook) - E'Twuan Moore scored 22 points and dished out five assists, leading seventh-ranked Purdue to a 74-63 win over South Dakota State in the first round of the Paradise Jam tournament.

Robbie Hummel added 14 points for the Boilermakers (2-0), who advanced to play St. Joseph's in the semifinals. Jajuan Johnson was effective on the boards, adding 13 points to his 10 rebounds -- five on the offensive end. Keaton Grant contributed nine points in the win.

Clint Sargent went 10-of-10 from the free throw line in a 16-point effort for the Jackrabbits (2-1), who were off to their first 2-0 start since starting 17-0 in 2003-04. Garrett Callahan added 13 points, and Nate Wolters had 11 in defeat.

Holding only a two-point lead over the feisty Jackrabbits early in the second half, Purdue scored nine straight points to go up by 11. Ryne Smith had five points, including a three-pointer with 13:12 left to make it a 50-39 game.

South Dakota State couldn't put together another run like it did in the first half to keep the game close, getting only to within eight for the remainder of the game.

Moore's layup with nine minutes left increased the Boilermakers' lead to 13, 59-46, and another layup by Moore three minutes later made it a 14-point game at 64-50. The Jackrabbits didn't make it a single-digit deficit until 72-63 with 1:35 left, and Grant's dunk with six seconds to go accounted for the final score.

Purdue took a 10-point lead early, 24-14, after a three-pointer by Grant, but the Jackrabbits used a 14-2 burst to tie the game at 28-all with 5 1/2 minutes on the clock. Callahan began the surge with seven straight points, and Sargent finished it with five consecutive points, including a three-pointer, to equalize the game.

The game remained close through the remainder of the half, and the Boilermakers held a slim 39-37 lead at the break.

Game Notes

It was the first-ever meeting between the schools...South Dakota State will take on Boston College in the loser's bracket of the tournament...Purdue scored 36 points in the paint, compared to 16 for the Jackrabbits.
