Streaking Flyers drop into Shark Tank

(My Sportsbook) - Few teams in the NHL are hotter right now than the Philadelphia Flyers. However, a trip to San Jose to battle the Sharks just might be what cools the club down.

The Flyers seek their first win at HP Pavilion in over 10 years tonight when they try to snap a 10-game winless streak versus the Sharks.

Including a 4-1 loss to San Jose at home this season, the Flyers haven't beaten the Sharks since December 21, 2000, going 0-6-2 with a pair of ties in 10 meetings since. Philadelphia is also 0-3-1 with a tie in five trips to HP Pavilion since its last win there on November 5, 1999.

The Flyers do come into town with some momentum, as they kicked off a five- game road trip with Wednesday's 3-2 victory over the Kings at Staples Center. Brian Boucher made 37 saves for his first victory of the season in just his second start of the year.

Mika Pyorala produced his first career goal for the Flyers, who have won seven of their last eight games and are 4-2-0 on the road this season. Mike Richards and James van Riemsdyk also scored, with the rookie van Riemsdyk tallying in his third straight game.

"The boys rallied around and had a great second period and made the difference," said Boucher. "I thought their third period was pretty strong. They threw everything at the net and I think they had over 20 shots in the third. It was a strong test there, but we were able to hold the fort and get the win."

Boucher, who spent each of the previous two seasons with the Sharks, got his first start of the season on October 25 versus San Jose. However, Ray Emery is likely to get the nod tonight in goal and has never before faced the Sharks.

San Jose backup Thomas Greiss was in net for the win over the Flyers in October, though Evgeni Nabokov should get the call this evening. Nabokov is 5-0-2 with a 2.49 goals-against average lifetime versus Philadelphia.

Greiss got his third start of the season on Tuesday, a 4-3 loss to Nashville that snapped San Jose's points streak at 12 games (9-0-3). Greiss made 27 saves in the loss.

Scott Nichol, Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau tallied for the Sharks, who suffered their first regulation loss since October 22.

"We turned it on at the end, but we thought we could do it again like we did back home," said Nichol, referring to San Jose's 4-3 comeback win over the Predators on November 10 when the Sharks scored twice late in the third period. "It wasn't the case and now it's back to the drawing board."

San Jose went 1-1-1 on a three-game swing and still leads the NHL with 32 points. The Sharks are 6-0-2 as the host this year and play three of their next four on the road following this contest.

Flyers defenseman Matt Carle, who leads the NHL with a plus-18 rating, will play in San Jose for the first time since the club traded him to Tampa Bay in July of 2008 as part of the Dan Boyle deal.

The Sharks drafted Carle in the second round of the 2003 draft and he was acquired from the Lightning by the Flyers on November 7, 2008.
