Uruguay came away with a 1-0 win in Costa Rica in the first leg, and Wednesday's result allowed them to claim a 2-1 aggregate win, sending Uruguay back to the World Cup for the first time since 2002. Costa Rica misses out on the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Uruguay took a 1-0 lead in Wednesday's contest after Sebastian Abreu's header in the 70th minute, while Costa Rica came right back and leveled the match four minutes later through Walter Centeno. Another goal would have put Costa Rica through instead of Uruguay, but the hosts held out over the final 15 minutes. |
