Calgary, AB (My Sportsbook) - Cody McLeod and Milan Hejduk scored 66 seconds apart late in the second period, as the
Colorado Avalanche maintained their perch atop the Northwest Division standings with a 3-2 win over Calgary at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Ryan Wilson pumped in his first NHL goal and collected an assist for the Avalanche, who snapped a three-game winless streak. Paul Stastny recorded two assists and Craig Anderson, making his 20th start of the season, stopped 34 shots for his 12th win.
"It was the type of game I expected tonight, a close-checking game and both teams had good chances," said Colorado head coach Joe Sacco.
Jarome Iginla and Rene Bourque lit the lamp for the Flames, who had picked up at least a point in their previous six games (5-0-1). Miikka Kiprusoff allowed three goals on 24 shots to take the loss.
"We had some scoring opportunities but we never capitalized on them," said Calgary head coach Brent Sutter.
Amidst a flurry in front of Kiprusoff, Wilson, whom Colorado acquired from the Flames last March, found a loose puck and ripped a backhander past the scrambling netminder for a 1-0 lead at the eight-minute mark of the first period.
The score remained the same until Iginla unleashed a rocket from the high slot that beat Anderson at 11:39 of the middle stanza.
While the Avalanche were on a power play, the Flames caught a break when Colorado defenseman Kyle Quincey had his stick break on an attempted one- timer. It resulted in an odd-man rush for Calgary and Bourque fired a wrister from the left circle past Anderson's glove with 2:42 remaining in the second.
The Avs overcame the sting of that short-handed marker, drawing even 42 seconds later on a goal by McLeod.
"It's easy to get down, but we didn't -- we came right back and we answered," Sacco added.
Calgary rearguard Robyn Regehr was whistled for cross-checking moments later and Colorado seized the lead when Hejduk's intended pass through the crease to Darcy Tucker deflected in off the right skate of the Flames' Jay Bouwmeester with 54 seconds to go before the intermission.
Anderson made 11 saves in the third period, including robbing Calgary forward Olli Jokinen twice with about three minutes remaining to preserve the win.
