Knoxville, TN (My Sportsbook) - Sophomore guard Scotty Hopson had a career night with 25 points on 6-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc, as the 10th- ranked Tennessee Volunteers set a school record for most points scored in a game with a 124-49 rout of UNC-Asheville at Thompson-Boling Arena.

It was an historic night for the men's Tennessee basketball program, as head coach Bruce Pearl picked up his 100th win as the coach of the Vols in the process. The Volunteers tied a school record with 16 three-pointers.

"Tonight we set some records offensively, and I'm sure that's probably what's going to be discussed. One hundred-twenty four points is the most we've scored; thirty-four assists (breaks) the record for assists; sixteen threes ties that record, but really it was all about our defense," said Pearl. "Our first-half defensive effort was as good as I've seen in a while. We talked about the fact that I think there's an understanding about how we're supposed to guard and help one another."

Bobby Maze added 14 points and seven assists for the Vols (2-0), who won 83-54 in their season opener against Austin Peay last Friday. Cameron Tatum had 13 points and five rebounds for Tennessee, which shot 59.7 percent from the field and 55.2 percent from beyond the arc.

J.P. Primm ended with 13 points for the Bulldogs (0-2), who opened their season at Charlotte last Friday, and fell to the 49ers by a score of 86-70. Terrence Turner tallied seven points for UNC-Asheville, which shot just 23.9 percent from the field and turned the ball over 29 times.

"At the beginning of the game, we did not do a darn thing. I am embarrassed for UNC-Asheville for Tennessee folks, because we want to come in here and make them learn, make them be a better basketball team. All we did tonight was give them some exercise," said Bulldogs head coach Eddie Biedenbach.

The Volunteers put together a first half for the record books at the expense of UNC-Asheville's poor play.

Tennessee came out of the gates on fire, as the Vols scored the first 20 points of the contest. The Volunteers made four three-pointers during the burst that Melvin Goins capped with a jumper just 4 1/2 minutes in.

On the ensuing Bulldogs possession, Turner made 1-of-2 from the foul line to finally put UNC-Asheville on the board. But the foul line became the only place where the Bulldogs could score.

Later in the half, a Maze layup ended an 8-0 spurt to put the Vols ahead 57-8. UNC-Asheville then ended an 0-for-19 drought from the field when Turner made a layup with 3:08 showing on the clock.

Tennessee, which shot 64.9 percent from the field in the half, held a commanding 66-14 margin after 20 minutes. The Bulldogs went 2-of-26 (7.7 percent) from the field in the first period while turning the ball over 16 times.

The Vols cruised to victory in the second half, and Michael Hubert's trey with about 1 1/2 minutes to go gave Tennessee 124 points. The Volunteers scored 121 points against Long Beach State on March 16, 2007 and versus Mexico on January 24, 1966.

The Bulldogs scored the final eight points of the contest to account for the final margin.

"Obviously, UNC-Asheville did not play well tonight. I've seen them play before, and they just did not play well tonight. They're a better team than that. They're picked second in their league and they're going to have a good year. They've got to bounce back," said Pearl.

Game Notes
