Columbus, OH (My Sportsbook) - Jakub Voracek scored the game-winning goal in the fourth round of the shootout, as the Columbus Blue Jackets edged the
Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, at Nationwide Arena.
With the shootout tied, 1-1, after three rounds, Voracek skated towards Edmonton goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and fired a wrister off the inside of the right post and into the back of the net. It all came down to Gilbert Brule for Edmonton, but his wrister was stopped by Mathieu Garon.
Anton Stralman had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets, who closed a four-game homestand with a 3-1-0 mark. Antoine Vermette had the other goal for Columbus, which got 23 saves from Garon.
"He's been good all year for us. He's given us a chance to win every night. He's played really well. We're really happy with his professionalism. He makes big saves at the right time," said Columbus head coach Ken Hitchcock. "Our guys play really well in front of him all the time. All in all, when you get a goalie that will give you quality starts like this, it's going to be a huge factor for the season."
Lubomir Visnovsky tallied a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who ended a five-game road trip with a 1-2-2 record. Ales Hemsky also lit the lamp for Edmonton, which got 30 saves from Khabibulin.
"The game is kind of a victory in a sense. The trip has four one-goal games on it and somehow we have to make a step and grab those points. We have to figure that out. We had two real good periods. The second period we had some turnovers and played too much in our zone. We had some good efforts from our players and we will take the positives out of that and head home and see if we can get back on track," said Edmonton head coach Pat Quinn.
Stralman's power-play goal broke a scoreless tie at the 7:08 mark of the second. The Blue Jackets got set up in the Edmonton zone with a 5-on-3 advantage. Kristian Huselius controlled the disc at the right circle before making a cross-ice pass to Stralman, whose slapshot got past Khabibulin.
Hemsky's power-play score at the 13:13 mark of the second tied the game at one. The Oilers went ahead, 2-1, when Visnovsky scored on the power play at the 5:48 mark of the third. Sheldon Souray's slapshot from the point set up a rebound at the left circle for Visnovsky, who fired a shot past Garon.
Vermette's power-play goal made it a 2-2 game with 7:34 remaining. Neither team scored in the final minutes, and the tilt went into overtime.
Each goaltender made three saves in OT to send the contest into a shootout.
