Paris, France (My Sportsbook) - Novak Djokovic captured his fifth title of 2009 with a three-set victory over French crowd favorite Gael Monfils in the title match of the Paris Masters.

Djokovic earned a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) triumph on Sunday for his second straight tournament crown and the 16th title of his career. He also won last week's Swiss Indoors tournament, beating another hometown favorite in world No. 1 Roger Federer.

Sunday was Djokovic's 10th final of the year, including his fifth in a Masters Series event. He had lost the previous four Masters finals, falling in Miami, Monte Carlo, Rome and Cincinnati.

"Winning back-to-back titles on this level is a huge achievement for me," said Djokovic, who added that he was well aware of his recent failures in the Masters finals. "The last four [Masters] finals that I've played this year I lost, so it was kind of in my head."

Monfils was gunning for his second title of 2009 in his third final. He lost in Acapulco in February and claimed the Metz crown in September.

After beating Rafael Nadal in the semifinals on Saturday, Djokovic appeared set to make quick work of Monfils on Sunday. He captured the first set with a pair of breaks and was up a break in the second before the Frenchman rallied to force a decisive set.

Djokovic again raced out to an early lead in the third set at 4-1, but Monfils broke back in the seventh game thanks to a double fault by the Serb to make it 4-3. It eventually headed to a tiebreak, which Djokovic won by capturing five of the last six points. A Monfils double fault on the first match point ended the two-hour, 43-minute contest.

"Of course [the] big support of the crowd gave him even more motivation and more energy towards the end of the match," noted Djokovic. "So I was kind of fighting him and fighting the big pressure of the crowd. I was trying to hold all my nerves. At the end of the match, I threw all my emotions out and was happy."

Monfils fell to 2-7 lifetime in ATP finals and also dropped to 0-4 against Djokovic. The two hadn't met since the quarterfinals of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Djokovic, who earned a first prize of $675,000, will next head to the ATP World Finals, starting November 22 in London. He won the season-ending title last year.

"I'm very happy that I managed to win a big tournament...before the end of the season," Djokovic remarked. "Now I'm coming with a lot of confidence in London, and the only question is if I'm able to physically rest and get energy for that event."

The ATP World Finals feature an eight-man field in a round-robin format.
