Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - Iman Shumpert poured in 18 points, as the 22nd- ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets opened the 2009-10 season with a 100-59 blowout of the Florida A&M Rattlers at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

Gani Lawal added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (1-0), who finished 12-19 last season. Derrick Favors ended with 10 points and eight rebounds, and fellow freshman Brian Oliver chipped in with 12 points for Georgia Tech, which shot 48.1 percent from the field.

"I thought our guys came out and played with a lot more energy tonight. Toward the end of the week we started cutting down on some things in practice to make sure the guys would be fresh coming into the game. I told the guys in the locker room if you check all your personal goals in at the door, we have the chance to have a great team," said Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt.

Christopher Walker ended with 15 points and five boards for the Rattlers (0-1), who went 10-21 last year. Brandon Bryant tallied 14 points for Florida A&M, which shot just 36.2 percent from the floor.

The Yellow Jackets dominated the contest from the start. Ahead 16-8 early, Georgia Tech ripped of 14 straight points to take total control. Shumpert's pair of free throws and slam capped the burst, giving the Yellow Jackets a 30-8 margin with 9:48 left until half.

A 9-0 flurry near the end of the first half had Georgia Tech ahead 46-16 with under two minutes to play. The Yellow Jackets, who shot 55.6 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes, held a 50-21 lead at the break.

Ahead 61-30 five minutes into the second half, Georgia Tech scored 11 consecutive points to turn the tilt into a laugher. Lance Storrs drilled a trey during the spurt and made a jumper to make it 72-30 with under 13 minutes remaining.

The Yellow Jackets cruised to victory from there.
