Ann Arbor, MI (My Sportsbook) - Manny Harris finished with 18 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists for the second triple-double in school history, as 15th-ranked Michigan blew out Northern Michigan, 97-50, in the season-opener for both schools.
Harris joined Gary Grant in school annals, as Grant recorded the other one in the 1987 NCAA Tournament against North Carolina.
DeShawn Sims finished with a game-high 22 points to go with 10 rebounds for the Wolverines (1-0), who are coming off a successful 2008-09 season. In John Beilein's second year as head coach, Michigan won 21 games last season, an 11- game improvement from Beilein's first year. The Wolverines also made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years and reached the second round before losing to Oklahoma.
Michigan, which is ranked in a preseason poll for the first time in 12 seasons, appears primed for more success, as the team returns four starters, including Sims and Harris.
Matt Vogrich added 15 points in Saturday's victory, while Darius Morris and Zack Gibson each scored 11.
Marc Renelique had 11 points to pace Northern Michigan (0-1), a Division II program that went 11-16 last season. Renelique also grabbed six rebounds.
Michigan began the game on an 11-2 run, which Morris capped with a three-point play. The Wolverines kept pulling away, as a Morris layup, Sims jumper and Stu Douglass three-pointer made it a 32-12 contest with seven minutes left in the first half.
Harris' three capped a six-point burst the Wolverines used to end the half, giving them a 52-25 lead at the break.
Sims' three-pointer a little more than four minutes into the second half capped a nine-point run to make it 66-29, and the Wolverines cruised the rest of the way.
