Seattle, WA (My Sportsbook) - Isaiah Thomas scored a career-high 30 points, and 14th-ranked Washington held on to beat a pesky Wright State team, 74-69, in the season opener for both schools.

Thomas went 7-of-14 from the field and hit 14-of-18 from the free throw line for the Huskies (1-0), who were ousted by Purdue in the second round of last season's NCAA Tournament. Quincy Pondexter added 12 points and nine rebounds, while Scott Suggs contributed nine points in the win.

"It was a great, great game for us and I think we will see more of the same tomorrow and more of the same on Sunday. These teams here are well-coached, fundamentally sound teams that won't go away. That was what we told our team the entire time. They're not going to go away," said Washington head coach Lorenzo Romar.

Todd Brown had a team-high 21 points and seven rebounds for Wright State (0-1), which won 20 games last season. N'Gai Evans added 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Cooper Land had 12 points in the setback.

"I thought that all in all we played an ok game. I am pleased with the way we were able to bounce back in the second half and play as hard as we did. We had to play a little more zone than we like to, but I thought that it was effective in the second half. I am a little disappointed with our effort, especially rebounding the basketball in the first half. I felt that we made it relatively interesting we just came up a little short," said Wright State head coach Brad Brownell.

Washington held a significant advantage in free throws, which proved to be a deciding factor in the outcome. The Huskies went to the line 35 times, making 27, while the Raiders made only 21 trips to the free throw line, sinking 15.

Trailing 49-31 early in the second half, Wright State started to chip away at its deficit.

An 11-3 run ensued for the Raiders, and Cory Cooperwood's layup with 11 minutes to go made it 52-42. Washington's lead continued to shrink, as a Brown three-pointer with 5:22 remaining cut the deficit to 60-54.

After a timeout, Washington scored four straight points -- all from Pondexter -- to push its lead to 10 with four minutes left.

Wright State answered with two baskets to get within six again, but a Pondexter layup with 1:03 to go put Washington up 67-58, and the Huskies sealed the win at the free throw line, making 7-of-8 the rest of the way.

Washington led, 14-13, before an 11-0 run put the Huskies in control.

A free throw by Matt Bryan-Amaning started the burst with 13 minutes remaining, and Wright State went without a point for more than four minutes. Venoy Overton's fastbreak layup with just over nine minutes left made it a 25-13 game.

The Huskies went up by as many as 15 in the first half and eventually carried a 40-28 lead into halftime.

Washington began the second half with five straight points, going up by 17 on Darnell Gant's jumper.

Game Notes

It was the first-ever meeting between the two schools...Washington went 26-9 last season and won the Pac-10 title.
