(My Sportsbook) - Ray Emery will face his former club for the first time tonight, as the goaltender leads the
Philadelphia Flyers in a home test against the
Ottawa Senators.
Emery spent last season playing in Russia, but as recently as the spring of 2007, he helped Ottawa to the Stanley Cup Finals, which the team lost to Anaheim. However, Emery clashed with coaches and the front office during the 2007-08 season and at the end of that campaign Ottawa decided to waive the netminder and buy out his contract.
Following his stint last season in the KHL, Emery was signed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal by the Flyers. The 27-year-old netminder has played well for Philadelphia, going 9-3-1 with a .922 save percentage and 2.27 goals-against average. Emery was 71-40-14 with a 2.71 GAA and .907 save percentage in five seasons with Ottawa.
"I don't follow them that closely," Emery told the Flyers' Web site about his former club. "I talked to a few guys there. I don't keep in touch with management or anything like that. It's just a team I used to play for."
Meanwhile, the Flyers will try to extend their longest winning streak of the season to five games and the surging club is expected to have a pair of key offensive pieces back on the Wachovia Center ice tonight in Danny Briere and rookie James van Riemsdyk.
Briere has missed the last four games since suffering a strained right quad against Washington on October 27. The veteran has five goals and two assists this year. Van Riemsdyk, who missed Philly's last game with a broken pinkie finger, has three goals and 11 assists in his first 12 NHL games.
The Flyers are coming off Saturday's close victory over visiting St. Louis as Mika Pyorala's first career shootout tally was the difference in the 2-1 decision.
Scott Hartnell scored in regulation for the Flyers, while Emery made 30 stops for the win.
Tonight marks the second of four straight on home ice for Philadelphia, which is 6-2-1 as the host this year. The Flyers will also welcome Buffalo and New Jersey before completing the residency.
The Senators come into tonight off a victory as they edged Edmonton in a shootout on Tuesday to post their second win in three outings. Jason Spezza registered the game-winning goal in the deciding segment to lift Ottawa to the 4-3 victory at Scotiabank Place.
Jonathan Cheechoo scored his first goal in a Senators uniform, while Chris Neil and Nick Foligno also tallied for Ottawa. Cheechoo was acquired along with Milan Michalek in the offseason deal that sent winger Dany Heatley to San Jose. He has one goal and two assists in his first 15 games with Ottawa, while Michalek has been much more productive with seven goals and three assists.
"I hadn't scored in a while so I started to press a little bit," said Cheechoo. "I put a lot of pressure on myself to do some things and scoring is one of them. Hopefully I'll be a lot more relaxed out there."
Pascal Leclaire ended with 31 saves in the victory for Ottawa.
The Senators, who will begin a five-game homestand in their next game Saturday against the New York Rangers, are 3-2-0 as the guest this year.
Ottawa took three of four from the Flyers in 2008-09 and the Sens have won eight of 12 overall in the series. However, the Senators have lost five of their last eight in the City of Brotherly Love.
