Fayetteville, AR (My Sportsbook) - The University of Arkansas announced suspensions to five men's basketball players ahead of Friday night's season opener against Alcorn State. The announcement of the suspensions were made by Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey. While the school didn't provide reasons for the suspensions, it's been reported by several media sources that three of the players were involved in a rape complaint, but no charges were filed. Freshman forward Glenn Bryant will miss two games. Junior guard Marcus Britt will miss the first six regular season contests due to a pair of separate violations of team rules. Walk-on student-athlete Nick Mason won't be permitted to be on the team's dress roster for games during the fall semester. Also, senior guard Stefan Welsh and sophomore guard Courtney Fortson were suspended indefinitely. According to the school, team members have participated in supplemental mandatory educational programming, community service requirements and additional conditioning and training regimens. "In the course of this process, we analyzed each student-athlete's situation independently and made determinations based on each set of circumstances," Pelphrey said in a statement. "We will continue to address disciplinary matters in a straight-forward manner and take action when players do not meet the expectations of conduct required of our student-athletes. Our program remains committed to representing the University of Arkansas, individually and collectively, in an appropriate manner." Fortson was second on the team in scoring last season, averaging 14.8 points per game, while Welsh was fourth at 11.5 ppg.
