London, England (My Sportsbook) - Captain John Terry scored his first goal of the season in the 76th minute and Chelsea held on to top Manchester United 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to open a five-point lead in the English Premier League.
Chelsea won its club record 11th straight at home, and left Manchester United third in the standings. Arsenal passed the two-time defending EPL champions on Saturday with a 4-1 win over Wolverhampton, and holds an 11-goal edge in goal differential with both sides on 25 points.
The Blues posted their third straight shutout at home and fifth of the season, while allowing just one goal in six matches in West London in the EPL.
Chelsea had the majority of the chances in the opening half, with Branislav Ivanovic racing down the right before testing United goalie Edwin van der Saar at the near post in the early stages.
Michael Ballack's long cross found Didier Drogba in the 18th but the striker's header was off target as Chelsea wasted another scoring chance.
Frank Lampard wasted a pair of free kicks in a five-minute span, then Van der Saar was forced to make a one-handed save on Nicolas Anelka on the last strong chance of the opening half.
United survived the scares to keep the game scoreless at half and Wayne Rooney nearly fired his side into the lead on its first good scoring chance of the game in the 67th.
Rooney and Antonio Valencia worked a nice give-and-go on the edge of the area, and the England striker took the return pass and slotted just inches wide of the left post.
Rooney followed with another chance seconds later but, after opening a little space outside the area, had his well-placed, curling shot saved at the upper- right corner by Chelsea goalie Petr Cech.
Chelsea responded with the winner in the 76th when Lampard finally made good use of a free kick to pick out Terry in the area. Terry raced onto the pass in the middle of the area and used a glancing header to beat Van der Saar to the upper-right corner.
Despite a heated final 20 minutes, United couldn't solve Chelsea's defense and dropped its third EPL match this season.
Also Sunday, American Clint Dempsey converted a penalty kick as Fulham posted a 1-1 tie against Wigan, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink came on as a sub for U.S. striker Jozy Altidore and notched the game-winner in Hull City's 2-1 win over Stoke City and Louis Saha scored his seventh of the season as Everton defeated West Ham 2-1.
On Monday, Liverpool will try to move up to fifth and to within nine points of Chelsea when it hosts Birmingham.
