Munich, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Bayern Munich has its "backs to the wall," according to co-captain Philipp Lahm, and needs a win against Schalke at the Allianz Arena on Saturday to forget about Tuesday's Champions League loss to Bordeaux.
Bayern is on the brink of elimination in the Champions League after the 2-0 defeat to Bordeaux at the Allianz, and sits sixth in the Bundesliga through 11 weeks as it tries to switch focus back to the league.
Bayern sits two points behind fourth-place Schalke, and Munich coach Louis van Gaal admitted this is "our chance to overtake Schalke" and "we have to win."
Bayern is seven points off the pace of leader Bayer Leverkusen, which won 4-0 against Eintracht on Friday. Schalke sits five off the pace.
Bayern is coming off the crushing loss to Bordeaux, and Schalke is unbeaten in its last five matches. In addition, the Royal Blues have the best road record, posting four wins and a draw in five matches away from Gelsenkirchen in league play.
"Bayern often used to grind out wins in the past, and everyone was happy with that. The most important thing right now is a win," Bayern captain Mark Van Bommel said.
Van Bommel said Bayern needs "passion and fighting spirit" to get the fans in the match and beat Schalke.
Bayern is still without Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic, but Arjen Robben is back from knee surgery and should play some role in Saturday's match.
"We're delighted he's here," Van Bommel said about Robben. "He has special talents others don't have."
Van Bommel cautioned it was too early to "expect too much from him," following recent surgery.
Bayern has scored just 18 goals this season, led by three apiece from Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez and Robben. Schalke has also struggled to score, managing just 17 goals, led by Kevin Kuranyi's six.
"We're generally very disciplined at the back, but we have a few problems when it comes to piecing together attacking moves," Schalke coach Felix Magath said. "You're not obliged to make the play as much when you're the away team, which is easier for us at the moment."
Magath hopes Bayern is a little tired after its midweek game, and can use that to its advantage to earn a key win.
"Bayern played a hard 90 minutes in the Champions League in midweek, and that will have burnt up energy. By contrast, we've been able to take it easy, so we have a chance of a result in Munich," Magath said.
Stefan Kiessling, Stefan Reinartz and Toni Kroos each scored in the opening 11 minutes as Leverkusen rolled to the easy win over Eintracht to open the week's action.
Also Saturday, Hoffenheim hosts Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich hosts Schalke, Bochum hosts Freiburg, Monchengladbach hosts Stuttgart and Mainz hosts Nurnberg.
On Sunday, Hannover hosts Hamburg, Hertha Berlin hosts Koln and Werder Bremen hosts Borussia Dortmund.
