Figo takes break from international play

Lisbon, Portugal (My Sportsbook) - Portuguese hero Luis Figo has at least temporarily retired from international play.

The 31-year-old Real Madrid star announced his intentions Wednesday through a written statement.

"At the moment I feel a need to stop playing," he explained. "I have never refused my country and no-one can predict the future."

Figo, the 2001 World Player of the Year, helped his country to the Euro 2004 final in front of the Portuguese fans earlier this summer. Despite the loss to Greece, Figo has decided to take a break (possibly permanently) from the international scene, instead concentrating his effort on helping Real Madrid regain its form of years past.

The skillful midfielder has made a record 110 appearances and scored 31 goals for Portugal. His senior national team debut came back in 1991, after leading Portugal's Under-20 team to a victory in the world championships.

"In 15 years serving the different national teams, I've had great experiences which have helped me grow and develop as a footballer and as a person," Figo said.

Figo and Rui Costa, who also retired from international play following Euro 2004, were part of the 'Golden Generation' of Portuguese football, which was supposed to capture numerous major trophies.

Despite some extensive success, Figo and Portugal were never able to obtain a coveted major title. They did advance to the final of Euro 2004, the semifinals of Euro 2000 and the quarterfinals of Euro '96 during their run with the squad.

Figo's professional career started in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon in 1990. He then made the move to Barcelona in 1995, quickly becoming a star and a fan favorite with the Spanish power. Figo spent five successful years with Barca, winning numerous titles and individual honors while scoring 30 goals in 172 matches for the club.

Real Madrid then swooped in and stole Figo from Barcelona for a then-record deal back in 2000. He has since helped Real Madrid to a pair of La Liga titles and a Champions League triumph.

After a disappointing finish last season, Real Madrid will be happy to have the full attention of one of its 'galacticos', as Figo will no longer have to travel to meet up with his Portuguese teammates to serve his country.
