St. Petersburg, Russia (My Sportsbook) - Fourth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy and fifth-seeded Russian favorite Igor Andreev were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the $750,000 St. Petersburg Open. The rising Chardy charged past Romanian qualifier Petru-Alexandru Luncanu 6-2, 6-2, while Andreev handled Italian Potito Starace 6-4, 6-2 on the indoor hardcourts at SCC Peterburgsky. Eighth-seeded Argentine Horacio Zeballos topped qualifier Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan 7-6 (11-9), 6-3, while an upset came when Ukrainian qualifier Sergiy Stakhovsky took out sixth-seeded Russian Evgeny Korolev 6-4, 6-3 on Day 3 here. Additional opening-round wins came for Ukrainians Illya Marchenko and qualifier Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. and Russian wild cards Andrey Kuznetsov and Michail Elgin. Dolgopolov Jr. was leading Robby Ginepri 6-2, 1-0 when the American retired due to a hip injury. British star Andy Murray, who is not defending his titles here this week, won a second straight championship here a year ago by besting Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev in the finale. This year's top seed is Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who just titled in his native Moscow over the weekend. The 2004 St. Petersburg champion Youzhny will meet Golubev here on Wednesday, while another first-rounder will pit outgoing Russian Marat Safin against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The 2000 and 2001 St. Petersburg titlist Safin will make his final appearance here as he intends to retire from the ATP World Tour at season's end. The 2009 St. Petersburg titlist will collect $115,150.
