Gearing up for the Breeders' Cup

Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - The best thoroughbreds in the country are training in southern California in preparation for the 26th annual Breeders' Cup World Championships on November 6 and 7 at Santa Anita Park.

Monday morning Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird worked five-furlongs in a very fast time of 58 1/5-seconds. Trainer Chip Woolley had the gelding gallop two miles Saturday morning in preparation of the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic.

The Classic will be at 1 1/4-miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby which Mine That Bird won as a 50-1 longshot. The last two runnings of the race have been won by three-year-olds, Curlin in 2007 and last year by Raven's Pass.

Leading three-year-old Summer Bird went to the track Sunday between races two and three. The winner of the Belmont and Travers Stakes had regular jockey Kent Desormeaux in the saddle for the five-furlong workout,

Trained by Tim Rice, Summer Bird covered the five-furlongs in 1:00.45. Summer Bird galloped out six-furlongs in 1:13.03.

"The work was great," Ice said about the work. "This was exactly what we wanted. He looked super getting over the track and he's been getting over it very well ever since we got here. Kent had a ton of horse under him and he just let him work on his own, within himself. I'm super-happy with how he's trained here and how he's handled everything. He'll go back to the track Tuesday morning.

"He'll work five-eighths next Saturday".

Champion mare Zenyatta had a workout Friday at Hollywood Park for trainer John Shirreffs. The five-year-old went six-furlongs in 1:11 1/5.

It is expected that the winner of last year's Ladies' Classic will be pre- entered to both the Breeders' Cup Classic and Ladies' Classic. Pre-entries for the World Championships will be announced Wednesday morning. A final decision on which race Zenyatta will start does not have to be made until the post position draw on Tuesday, November 3.

On Saturday at Hollywood Park, 2008 Filly & Mare Sprint champion Ventura worked six-furlongs in 1:12.20 for the seven-furlong race on Friday, November 6.

Not yet in California are champion turf mare Forever Together and female sprinter Informed Decision. Trainer Jonathan Sheppard has both ladies at his Chester County, Pennsylvania farm.

Following workouts Sunday at the farm, Sheppard is scheduled to move the pair to Keeneland by Monday. Sheppard said the two will have their final Breeders' Cup workouts on Sunday at Keeneland before leaving for California the next day.

Forever Together will defend her crown in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf and Informed Decision is expected to be the favorite for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Both races are slated to be run on Friday, November 6.
