Orchard Park, NY (My Sportsbook) - Buffalo Bills quarterback Trent Edwards has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Carolina due to lingering effects from a concussion suffered last weekend. Edwards' injury opens the door for backup Ryan Fitzpatrick to start against the Panthers. Fitzpatrick worked with the first team offense this week in Edwards' absence and provided a late spark last Sunday in Buffalo's 16-13 overtime win versus the Jets. Fitzpatrick took over for Edwards in the second quarter and ended 10-of-25 for 116 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Edwards completed each of his five passes totaling 43 yards before receiving a blow to the head on a sack by New York's Calvin Pace and David Harris. Edwards' body twisted in a weird way and he remained on the ground for a few minutes before being helped to the locker room. In addition to Edwards, offensive tackle Jonathan Scott (ankle), safeties Bryan Scott (ankle) and Donte Whitner (ankle) have also been ruled out for Sunday. Scott will miss his second straight game with rookie Jamon Meredith again getting the start at right tackle. Rookie Jairus Byrd and fourth-year pro George Wilson will start at the safety positions. Tight end Shawn Nelson (illness) is officially doubtful after being unable to practice this week, while defensive tackle Kyle Williams (shoulder) is questionable. Wide receiver Terrell Owens sat out practice Friday, but head coach Dick Jauron said his absence was not injury related.
