NFC East: A change coming in Washington, more to follow?

(My Sportsbook) - It's entirely possible that both the current and future head coaches of the Washington Redskins will be inside FedEx Field when the Burgundy and Gold hosts the Philadelphia Eagles this coming week.

Speculation is running rampant that the Monday night tussle between those two NFC East rivals could be the swan song of Jim Zorn's tumultuous 1 1/2-year tenure as the Redskins' sideline boss. With Washington having a bye following the Philadelphia game, disgraced team owner Daniel Snyder will have a logical opportunity to finally make the move that's been universally believed to be in the works for weeks a reality.

Zorn certainly didn't do anything to help change the perception of his lame- duck status in the Redskins' most recent outing, a 14-6 home loss to the previously-winless Kansas City Chiefs this past Sunday. That discouraging defeat came on the heels of a 20-17 setback at Carolina in Week 5, a game in which Washington squandered a 15-point second-half lead.

The Redskins mustered a paltry 265 yards and zero touchdowns against a beleaguered Kansas City stop unit that entered Sunday's tilt ranked dead last in the NFL in total defense. Such undesired results have been all too familiar under Zorn, who also dabbles as his own offensive coordinator and play-caller on top of his head coaching duties. Washington ranks 29th out of the league's 32 clubs with an average of 13.2 points per game and hasn't topped more than 17 points in any contest this season.

In response to that glaring lack of production, Zorn was asked by team vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato shortly after Sunday's game to concede the play-calling to Sherman Lewis, whom the Redskins brought out of retirement earlier this month to serve as a consultant in the wake of the offense's ongoing struggles. The 67-year-old has a wealth of experience within Washington's West Coast scheme, having been an offensive coordinator for three NFL teams during a coaching career that's spanned more than three decades.

Zorn did not object to Cerrato's decision, which can easily be viewed as the first step of an inevitable phasing out of the current regime.

"This offense is better than six points, and that's on me," said Zorn after Sunday's loss. "We're deep into the red zone and to not be able to score, it's awful and it's my fault. I've got to be better."

How much more time Zorn will get to sharpen his skills remains to be seen. A report in the Washington Examiner last week stated that Snyder has a strong interest in former Raiders and Buccaneers head man Jon Gruden, now an analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football who will just happen to be in the broadcast booth for the Redskins' next game.

Quarterback Jason Campbell seems to be on somewhat shaky ground as well. The former first-round pick, a free agent at season's end, was benched by Zorn in favor of veteran Todd Collins at halftime after completing just 9-of-16 passes for 89 yards and an interception.

QUICK HITS: Collins threw for 75 yards on 6-of-14 passing in place of Campbell and was sacked for a safety in the fourth quarter...Running back Clinton Portis rushed for 109 yards on 15 carries in the loss, with most of that total coming on a career-long 78-yard burst in the third quarter. Portis' previous career best of 65 yards also came against the Chiefs on October 5, 2003, while working as a member of the Denver Broncos.

NEXT UP: Zorn will be attempting to garner a win against a Philadelphia team he's never lost to, as the Redskins took both meetings between the divisional foes last year to notch their first season sweep of the Eagles since 2005.

PHILADELPHIA: The Eagles will be entering Monday's matchup with the Redskins hoping to gain some needed momentum as well, following this past Sunday's startling 13-9 defeat to an Oakland Raiders squad that had lost each of its past three games by 20 points or more.

Philadelphia, which entered the Week 6 docket ranked second in the NFL in scoring (31.8 ppg), managed a mere three field goals and 283 total yards against the lowly Raiders, who were coming off a non-competitive 44-7 shellacking at the hands of the New York Giants their last time out. An out- of-sync offense converted a woeful 2-of-16 third-down opportunities and repeatedly bogged down within the red zone, while quarterback Donovan McNabb was sacked six times by an Oakland pass rush that was surprisingly potent.

McNabb was often off-target when he did have time to throw, with the seasoned signal-caller misfiring on 24 of his 46 pass attempts while finishing with a relatively harmless 269 yards.

"We didn't go out today and execute our offense at all," running back Brian Westbrook remarked. "We had a couple of drives that we weren't able to put the ball in the end zone. We are a lot better team that we played like today. We are better than three field goals and no touchdowns."

A usually-reliable offensive line struggled mightily in protection after two- time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters was forced to exit with a knee injury in the first quarter. The team did receive good news about the valuable offseason acquisition's condition afterward, however, as Peters was diagnosed with a knee contusion and ankle sprain that isn't expected to keep him out of this week's test.

Two Eagle defenders, end Victor Abiamiri (left knee sprain) and linebacker Omar Gaither (sprained foot), also left Sunday's loss with injuries that have put both players' status for the Washington game in question.

QUICK HITS: Westbrook posted season-highs of nine catches and 91 receiving yards while adding 50 yards on six carries...Rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, coming off a sensational six-catch, 142-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Eagles' Week 5 win over Tampa Bay, had just one reception totaling six yards against the Raiders...Kicker David Akers missed a pair of field goal attempts, one a 43-yard try and the other from 47 yards out...Wide receiver Kevin Curtis sat out a third straight game with continued soreness in his left knee.

NEXT UP: The Eagles will make their first Monday night appearance of this season when they visit FedEx Field to take on the embattled Redskins. Philadelphia was dealt a 13-10 road loss by Washington last December but is 7-3 as the visitor in this series under head coach Andy Reid. The Eagles have not dropped back-to-back games since Weeks 4 and 5 of the 2008 campaign, with the second of those losses coming to the Redskins at Lincoln Financial Field.

N.Y. GIANTS: It was a forgettable weekend as well for the division-leading New York Giants, whose season-opening unbeaten streak came to a crashing halt with Sunday's 48-27 trouncing by the high-powered New Orleans Saints at the Superdome.

New York entered the marquee matchup between undefeated teams as the NFL's leader in both total defense and pass defense, but was helpless in its attempts to slow down the league's highest-scoring team. New Orleans put up touchdowns in each of its first four possessions and roared out to a 34-17 halftime lead before finishing with 493 total yards, the most the Giants have allowed in a single game since a loss to the then-Phoenix Cardinals on November 13, 1988.

The Saints were able to effectively neutralize New York's normally-impactful pass rush to allow Drew Brees to throttle an injury-plagued Giants secondary. The standout quarterback threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns and was not sacked at all on the afternoon.

"They pretty much were able to do what they wanted to do," said Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora. "We have to look at the film and figure out why we did not get a good pass rush. If you give (Brees) and that offense enough time that's not good, and that's what happened today."

The Giants' only sack came on the Saints' final play from scrimmage, when linebacker Chase Blackburn took down backup quarterback Mark Brunell after the two-minute warning.

New York had yielded a minuscule 104.8 yards per game through the air during its 5-0 start, but Sunday's outcome showed that impressive number may have had more to do with a rather suspect slate of opposing passers. In their three most recent games leading up to the loss, the Giants had faced Tampa Bay's Byron Leftwich, Kansas City's Matt Cassel and Oakland disappointment JaMarcus Russell, with that uninspiring trio combining for an anemic 210 net passing yards.

The 48 points surrendered were New York's most since a 50-21 loss to Washington at the Meadowlands on September 19, 1999.

QUICK HITS: Quarterback Eli Manning, a New Orleans native, played in his home city for the first time in his six-year career and completed 14-of-31 throws for 178 yards with one touchdown and one interception...Wide receiver Domenik Hixon set a Giants' single-game record with 302 total yards, gaining 230 on seven kick returns and taking a pair of punts for 51 yards in addition to making three catches totaling 22 yards...Rookie wideout Hakeem Nicks established career-bests of five catches and 114 receiving yards along with a touchdown...Right offensive tackle Kareem McKenzie left Sunday's loss in the second quarter with a strained groin.

NEXT UP: The Giants return home this coming Sunday for a primetime clash with the defending conference champion Arizona Cardinals, who have won two straight games and currently hold a share of the NFC West lead with a 3-2 record after this past weekend's convincing 27-3 victory at Seattle. These teams engaged in a tightly-contested affair in Phoenix last November, with New York coming through with a hard-fought 37-29 decision.

DALLAS: The Dallas Cowboys figure to be well-prepared for a challenging upcoming stretch after undergoing a bye week that helped enable two key offensive players to get closer to full strength.

Both wide receiver Roy Williams and running back Felix Jones were on the field when the team resumed practice on Monday and barring anything unforeseen, are expected to be in uniform when the Cowboys host Atlanta this Sunday. Jones has not played since spraining his left knee in a 21-7 triumph over Carolina in Week 3, while Williams sat out the Cowboys' overtime win at Kansas City that preceded the break due to bruised ribs.

The return of Jones adds another dimension to one of the league's best rushing attacks. The speedy second-year pro averaged a whopping 10.1 yards per rush prior to his injury and delivered 94 yards on just eight attempts before being forced to exit the Carolina game.

Williams will have a new running mate in the starting lineup against the Falcons, with Miles Austin having passed incumbent Patrick Crayton on the depth chart following a breakout day against the Chiefs. Austin set a franchise record with 250 receiving yards on 10 grabs and broke free for two long touchdowns, including a 60-yard catch-and-run in overtime that accounted for the winning points.

Dallas may need all of its offensive weapons for its upcoming bout with the talented Falcons, who moved to 4-1 on the young season after holding off Chicago on Sunday. After a home date against Seattle, the Cowboys then take to the road for a pair of tough matchups with Philadelphia and Green Bay.

Head coach Wade Phillips owns a strong 6-2 mark after the bye over the course of his career, with the Cowboys having won both of their games following the extended rest since he took over in 2007.

NEXT UP: The Falcons will be making their first visit to Dallas since a 27-13 win at the old Texas Stadium during the 2003 season. The Cowboys took the most recent meeting between these teams, a 38-28 decision at the Georgia Dome back on December 16, 2006.
