Luxembourg, Luxembourg (My Sportsbook) - Third-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain and sixth-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany were a pair of first-round winners Monday at the $220,000 Luxembourg Open. Medina Garrigues grounded fellow Spaniard Arantxa Parra Santonja 7-5, 6-2, while the big-serving Lisicki handled Czech Iveta Benesova 6-1, 6-4 at CK Sportcenter Kockelscheuer. Also on Monday, eighth-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro held off wild card Mandy Minella of Luxembourg 7-5, 5-7, 6-3. Russian Elena Dementieva edged out Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki in last year's finale here. Dementieva is not defending her title this year, while the U.S. Open runner-up Wozniacki is back as the top seed. This week's second seed is U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters. Wozniacki will open her week against American Melanie Oudin, while the former world No. 1 Clijsters will face American Meghann Shaughnessy. This week's titlist will claim $37,000. |
