Eagles fall into "Black Hole" in Oakland

Oakland, CA (My Sportsbook) - Zach Miller caught six passes for 139 yards and the game's only touchdown, as the Oakland Raiders used a strong defensive effort to pull out a 13-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

JaMarcus Russell set season highs in completions (17) and passing yards (224) for the Raiders (2-4), finishing 17-for-28 with the touchdown and two interceptions. Justin Fargas ran for 87 yards on 23 carries.

While Oakland's offense came close to its point-per-game average of 9.8, its defense provided a stellar effort to facilitate the win. The Raiders came into Sunday's contest allowing 26 points per game, facing an Eagles team that had averaged 368.8 yards and 31.8 points.

But Oakland recorded six sacks and held the Eagles to 283 total yards and three field goals in snapping a three-game losing streak.

"Whether it's the Eagles or whoever, it was great to win, period," Russell said. "By beating the Eagles, we're trying to make it something to move upon, gain something from it, build from it to keep us going."

Donovan McNabb threw for 269 yards on 22-of-46 passing, and looked out-of- rhythm for Philadelphia (3-2), which had little in the way of a rushing attack. Brian Westbrook had only six carries, running for 50 yards, and also caught nine passes for 91 yards for the Eagles, who had won their last two.

"I think we came out intense, we came out ready to play. I don't think the guys underestimated this team at all," Westbrook said. "But it's tough to keep that emotion up when you're going three-and-out, you're not scoring, you miss a couple field goals, when you're not doing what you're normally used to doing."

The Raiders held a 10-6 lead at halftime, and neither team scored throughout the third quarter. The Eagles' David Akers missed a 47-yard field goal on the first drive of the second half, and the Raiders turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession.

A series of punts ushered the game into the fourth quarter, and the Raiders widened their lead shortly into the final stanza.

Following a Philadelphia punt, the Raiders took over at their own 40-yard- line, and Fargas ran for 14 yards on the first play. Russell later connected with Gary Russell for an 18-yard gain to the Philadelphia 31. Oakland's drive stalled there, and Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 46-yard field goal for a 13-6 Oakland lead with 10:25 left.

The Eagles then went three-and-out, as McNabb was sacked on 3rd-and-7, though got the ball back after Oakland punted.

McNabb completed a 42-yard pass to tight end Brent Celek on the first play, bringing the Eagles to the Oakland 27. But McNabb threw two consecutive incompletions deep, and his short pass to fullback Leonard Weaver went for no gain. Akers kicked a 45-yarder through the uprights, bringing the Eagles within 13-9 with 6:06 left.

Oakland had to punt again on its next series, and the Eagles took over with 3:42 on the clock. On the second play of the drive, Westbrook ran for 11 yards, and McNabb followed with a short pass to DeSean Jackson, who stretched it into a 12-yard gain.

It gave the Eagles a first down at the Oakland 49, but McNabb had two deep incompletions before being pressured on 3rd-and-10. He scrambled for the first down, but was tripped up four yards shy. McNabb then went to Jackson deep down the left side of the field, but the pass bounced before Jackson caught it and ruled incomplete.

The Eagles still had two timeouts and used them both in forcing Oakland into a 3rd-and-10 with 2:02 left, but Russell's pass to Gary Russell went for 13 yards, and Oakland ran out the clock from there.

Philadelphia's offense was particularly ineffective in the second half, as the Eagles gained just five first downs, went three-and-out on four consecutive drives.

Both teams' offenses started out slowly, punting on each of their first two possessions.

The Eagles had a chance for points after Asante Samuel intercepted Russell in Oakland territory, giving Philadelphia the ball at the 29. But the Eagles gained just four yards and came up empty as Akers missed a 43-yarder.

Akers did put the Eagles on the board on their next drive, as he was successful from 45 yards out with 2:27 left in the first.

But Oakland took the lead almost immediately, scoring on the first play of its next drive. Russell completed a pass over the middle to Miller, who had run past Jeremiah Trotter in coverage.

Samuel attempted a tackle, but missed and ended up diving to the ground. That forced Miller to slow up, allowing Trotter to get a hand on the jersey of the tight end. But Miller ran out of it, then got a couple of nice blocks from wideout Louis Murphy on the way to the 86-yard score.

Janikowski added a 29-yarder with 7:45 left in the second quarter, and Akers' 43-yarder with six seconds left made it a four-point game at the break.

Game Notes

The Eagles entered Sunday's game having allowed six sacks all season...Miller's 139 receiving yards were a career high...Jackson ended with six receptions for 94 yards for the Eagles...Philadelphia left tackle Jason Peters left the game in the first half with a left knee injury.
