Johnson widens points lead with another Chase race win

Concord, NC (My Sportsbook) - Jimmie Johnson won for the third time in the first five Chase races with a convincing victory in Saturday's NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Johnson edged Kasey Kahne out of the pits during the final round of stops and then held off Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon in three late-race restarts for his Sprint Cup Series-leading sixth victory of the season. He also claimed his sixth victory at Charlotte, but the first one since October 2005.

"It's so special for me to win here at Lowe's Motor Speedway in the Lowe's car for the final race here at the speedway with the sponsorship," said Johnson, who started on the pole and led a race-high 92 laps.

Lowe's is ending their track-title sponsorship with the 1.5-mile track at the end of the year.

With the victory, Johnson took command in the Chase by padding his lead to 90 points over Mark Martin, who finished 17th, and 135 ahead of Gordon.

Johnson, who is marching towards his unprecedented fourth straight Cup title, won last weekend's 500-mile race at California and grabbed the points lead for the first time this season. He had a dominant week at Charlotte, capturing the pole on Thursday and leading the way in practices.

"It was a perfect weekend," he said. "It's what [crew chief] Chad [Knaus] has always wanted to do, win every practice, qualifying and the race, and we got it."

Matt Kenseth finished second, followed by title contenders Kahne and Gordon. Rookie Joey Logano was fifth.

Since the first race in the Chase at New Hampshire, Gordon has climbed from 10th to third in points.

"All you really want to do is get maximum points and finish ahead of the guys you're racing in the points," Gordon said. "Other than Jimmie, we're doing that."

Clint Bowyer, Casey Mears, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex Jr. and Kurt Busch, another Chase contender, completed the top-10.

Juan Pablo Montoya began the Chase by finishing fifth or better in the first four races, but Montoya endured his worst finish of the season with a 35th- place run. On lap 126, Montoya sustained rear end damage when Martin made contact with him just after a restart. He eventually fell four laps behind.

"I checked up and then [Martin] just hit me and ripped the whole rear out of the car, and then I got hit into the car in front of us."

Montoya took the biggest hit in points, dropping three positions to sixth (-195).

Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin also plummeted in points after the two Chase contenders suffered engine failure. Hamlin dropped a valve midway through the race and ended up finishing 42nd, while Edwards' engine expired in the closing laps for a 39th-place result.

Hamlin has dropped five positions in points in the last two races.
