Vilamoura, Portugal (My Sportsbook) - Retief Goosen fired an eight-under 64 Saturday to grab a one-stroke lead after 54 holes of the Portugal Masters.
Goosen completed three rounds at 20-under-par 196. He set the tournament's 54- hole scoring record by two strokes. Daniel Vancsik set the old record of 198 in 2007.
Francesco Molinari, who led after the first two rounds, posted a four-under 68 and is alone in second place at minus-19.
Lee Westwood carded a 66 to move into third place at 17-under-par 199. Pablo Martin is one stroke back at minus-16 after shooting 68 on Saturday.
Goosen flew out of the gates with a birdie on the first and a hole-out eagle on the par-four second. He birdied the fifth to move to 16-under at Oceanico Victoria Golf Course.
"You get off to a good start like that and it sets up a round," Goosen said. "You gain some spots on the field because everyone is making birdies out there. It's nice to get a good round going."
The two-time U.S. Open winner parred four in a row from the sixth. After a birdie at 10 tied him for the lead, Goosen rolled in an eight-footer for birdie on 11 to move one clear of Molinari.
Goosen made it three in a row with a two-putt birdie on the par-five 12th. That gave him a two-stroke lead, but that cushion was erased when Molinari birdied the par-three 13th and Goosen stumbled to a bogey on 14.
The South African quickly regained the lead with a chip-in birdie on No. 15. After Molinari also birdied 15, Goosen two-putted for birdie on the par-five 17th. He parred the last for the one-shot lead.
"I spent three hours on the range hitting balls [last Saturday morning], and trying different things," said Goosen, who sat out the morning session at the Presidents Cup last weekend. "I started hitting the ball well on Sunday, I just didn't make any putts."
Molinari converted short birdie putts on two and three to get to 17-under. He dropped a shot on the seventh, but recovered with a birdie on No. 9.
Around the turn, Molinari parred three in a row before making his third birdie in three days at the 13th. He got up and down for birdie on the short par-four 15th to grab a piece of the lead.
Molinari gave that stroke right back with a bogey on the 16th, but he rebounded with a birdie on 17 to end one back.
"It was another good day," Molinari stated. "I am one shot back and it is not going to be easy with Goosen in front. I left a few chances on the course."
Oliver Wilson fired an eight-under 64 to jump into a share of fifth at 15- under-par 201. He was joined there by Peter Lawrie (65), Charl Schwartzel (71) and Gareth Maybin (65).
Three-time major champion Padraig Harrington managed a one-under 71 and stands alongside Robert-Jan Derksen (67), Peter Hanson (66), James Kingston (67) and Oliver Fisher (68) at minus-14.
Defending champion Alvaro Quiros also managed a 71 and slid into a share of 17th at 12-under-par 204.
