Washington, D.C. (My Sportsbook) - The U.S. men's national soccer team earned CONCACAF's top spot in qualifying for the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a 2-2 draw over Costa Rica in its last qualifying match on Wednesday at RFK Stadium. Jonathan Bornstein pulled the U.S. even almost five minutes into second-half stoppage time to crush Costa Rica's chances at an automatic berth. Costa Rica will now be forced to play a two-legged playoff against Uruguay, which finished fifth in South American qualifying after losing to Argentina earlier on Wednesday. Costa Rica actually went up 2-0 in the first half-hour after two goals from Bryan Ruiz gave the visitors what seemed like a commanding lead. The first goal was scored in the 21st minute when Ruiz turned on U.S. defender Oguchi Onyewu in the penalty area and charged toward goal before depositing the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Tim Howard. Less than three minutes later Ruiz struck again when he took a pass from Walter Centeno, found some space and fired a curling shot that beat Howard high in the left corner of the net. The U.S. finally pulled one back in the 72nd minute when Michael Bradley found a loose ball in the area and slotted it home. That was how the scored looked like it would stay until a 95th minute corner was headed home by Bornstein to ensure the U.S.' position at the top of the CONCACAF table heading to the World Cup in South Africa. Also, as a result of the Americans' late draw, Honduras qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1982. Note: The U.S. was playing without striker Charlie Davies, who was seriously injured in a car crash Tuesday. ... "Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation," U.S. Soccer physician Dr. Dan Kalbac said of Davies' lacerated bladder and fractures to the tibia and femur bones in his right leg. "Due to Charlie's fitness level, his prognosis for recovery and his ability to resume high-level competition is substantially improved."
