Washington, D.C. (My Sportsbook) - U.S. coach Bob Bradley called Saturday's 3-2 victory over Honduras the most "important" match in qualifying because it clinched a berth in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but he still wants to "win the group."
In addition to clinching its sixth straight trip to the World Cup finals, the U.S. remained ahead of rival Mexico in the final CONCACAF standings, and needs a win Wednesday against Costa Rica to wrap up first in the group.
"It is important to win the group. We take a great amount of pride in trying to be the best team in CONCACAF," Bradley said.
"With this win, we're in position going into the Costa Rica game to finish first in the group, and that's the goal."
Bradley and the U.S. were stunned Tuesday, though, when striker Charlie Davies was injured in a one-car accident that killed one passenger. Davies underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon, and was in stable condition.
"Obviously, as a team we were saddened to learn this news," Bradley said. "As a team, we are relying on each other in a moment that has for sure hit us all hard."
The United States, which got two goals from surprise starter Conor Casey in the Honduras win, will try to turn its focus to Costa Rica and protecting its perfect 8-0-0 home qualifying record when the teams meet at RFK Stadium.
Jozy Altidore, who did not start against Honduras, is likely to join Casey up top with Davies sidelined.
U.S. star Landon Donovan, who had a goal and an assist against Honduras, knows the pressure if off the team.
"You don't want to go into the last game leaving anything to chance. As we see around the world, even with qualifiers, anything can happen in one soccer game and we didn't want to leave that opportunity open," Donovan said.
"It was nice to get it done."
Costa Rica is under a ton of pressure, needing a win to hold off Honduras for third place and the final automatic Cup berth from CONCACAF.
Costa Rica is two points ahead of Honduras, and Honduras visits El Salvador in need of a win to have hopes of finishing third. Mexico, which has also secured a berth in the Cup, visits Trinidad and Tobago in the region's other match.
The fourth-place finisher will play a two-match, home-and-home series against the fifth-place team from South American qualifying.
Argentina, Uruguay and Ecuador enter Wednesday's final games in South America still battling for fourth and fifth in the standings. Argentina visits Uruguay and Ecuador visits Chile, which has already clinched along with Paraguay and Brazil.
Argentina currently sits fourth, followed by Uruguay and Ecuador.
