THREES COMPANY
Jose Capellan, Sean Fesh, and Kevin Barry stymied Columbus bats as the Richmond Braves shutout the Clippers, 9-0. The trio combined to allow just two hits in the game. Capellan started the game and lasted six innings. He surrendered just two hits, walked one, and struck out eight to improve to 3-1. Fesh relieved Capellan and tossed two innings of perfect baseball as he struck out one. Barry completed the game and shutout by pitching a perfect ninth inning. Richmond's Luis Lopez, Damon Hollins, and James Jurries all knocked in two runs in the win. Lopez delivered a home run and scored two runs in the win. DeWayne Wise collected three hits and scored three times.
SOTO LEADS DIAMOND JAXX
Geovany Soto homered twice and drove in four runs to lead the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx over the Carolina Mudcats, 7-2. With the win, West Tenn improved to 20-28, while Carolina fell to 22-26. Soto got the Diamond Jaxx on the board early with a two-run blast in the second inning. In a four-run fourth inning, Soto again smacked a home run to score two runs. Jose Arteaga had an RBI double in the frame. Matt Craig contributed his 17th home run of the season in the victory. Ricky Nolasco recorded the win for West Tenn. In six innings he scattered seven hits, allowed two earned runs, walked one and struck out five. Nolasco is 4-3. Mike McNutt (2-1) was touched for six earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in 2 2/3rd innings to absorb the loss. Carolina's Jason Stokes registered two hits and drove in a run in the loss.
JACK OF ALL TRADES
Bill Selby's pinch-hit single scored Nate Bland with the winning run as the Iowa Cubs edged the Albuquerque Isotopes, 2-1 in twelve innings. With two down in the twelfth, Bland singled and moved to second when Russ Johnson drew a walk. Selby then delivered the clinching hit to make a loser out of Isotopes reliever, Juan Alvarez. Selby finished the game with two hits and a run scored. Bland (8-4) also recorded the win in the game in 2/3rds of an inning of relief work. Alavarez fell to 2-3 on the season with the loss. Brian Banks smashed his fifth home run of the season in the Pacific Coast League to account for the lone Isotopes run.
HILLCATS LYNCH INDIANS
Jonathan Albaladejo pitched a five-hit complete game gem as the Lynchburg Hillcats blanked the Kinston Indians, 1-0 in a Carolina League contest. Albaladejo struck out four Indians as he improved to 8-7 on the year. Ray Navarrete knocked in the only run of the game in the first frame. Kinston's Keith Ramsey (9-4) pitched well but took the loss. In six innings he yielded just on earned run on six hits and a walk. Ramsey fanned four in the effort.
DUNWOODY TO THE RESCUE
Todd Dunwoody's pinch-hit double scored Terry Tiffee in the bottom of the tenth inning and lifted the Rochester Red Wings over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, 3-2 in an International League game Sunday afternoon. Dunwoody's base knock came off of Red Barons' reliever Jim Crowell and dropped his record to 6-3. Kevin West smacked his first home run in International League play in the win. Beau Kemp earned the win for Rochester after he tossed two innings of perfect relief. Kemp struck out two as he improved to 6-2. Crowell went 1 2/3rd innings in the loss. He surrendered two hits and struck out one. Jim Rushford went 2-for-4 and smacked his sixth home run of the season.
VAZQUEZ STINGS SALT LAKE
Ramon Vazquez had a monster game hitting two home runs including the game- winning two run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Portland Beavers as they defeat the Salt Lake Stingers, 9-8. Xavier Nady, Yamid Haad and Ben Risinger each hit a solo home run to help propel the Beavers to victory. Eddie Oropesa (3-1) picked up the win pitching two innings in relief. He allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout. Beavers's starter Brian Sweeney had a forgettable outing allowing six runs in five innings. He gave up six hits, three walks and two home runs. Derrick Turnbow (2-6) picked up the loss allowing three runs on three hits including two home runs in only 1/3rd of an inning. Adam Riggs went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run, his 23rd of the season. Alex Pelaez and Brian Gordon each added solo home runs for the Stingers in the loss. The Beavers are currently riding a five game winning streak and improve their record to 69-53 on the season and are first place in the Northern Division. The Stingers fall to 45-76 on the season and remain in last place.
BARD BRINGS BACK BISONS
Josh Bard hit the game-winning three run home run with two out in the bottom of the tenth inning for the Buffalo Bisons as they come back to defeat the Ottawa Lynx, 5-2. The Bisons did went scoreless until Chris Clapinski's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Ryan Ludwick tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Nate Grindell to put the game into extra innings for the second consecutive night. Fernando Cabrera (3-3) picked up the win pitching two shutout innings allowing only one hit while striking out two batters. Bisons's starter Jason Davis had a solid outing allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out eight in six innings pitched. Jerry Spradlin (1-2) picked up the loss giving up the Bard home run. He pitched one inning giving up two hits and a walk. Lynx's starter John Maine threw six innings giving up only one hit. Joey Hammond had the only multi-hit game for the Lynx going 2-for-4 with a RBI.
RED"HOT"BIRDS SILENCE THE SOUNDS
Chris Prieto and Scott Seabol each hit a three run home run for the Memphis Redbirds as they blew out the Nashville Sounds, 11-2. Seabol got the Redbirds on the board early by hitting his 29th home run of the season in the top of the first inning and they never looked back. Prieto went 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored. So Taguchi also was impressive with the bat as he went 4- for-5 with two runs scored for the Redbirds in the victory. Mark Nussbeck (1-1) pitched six strong innings striking out seven. He allowed one run on four hits and one walk. Kevin Jarvis got the loss allowing five runs in five innings. He allowed nine hits and walked four batters. Jim Mann allowed five runs on five hits in only 1 1/3rd innings pitched in relief. Tony Alvarez and Freddy Sanchez each hit solo home runs for the Sounds, these proved to be their only runs. The Redbirds and the Sounds are currently going in opposite directions, the Redbirds swept the four game series with the Sounds and are now winners of 14 out of their last 18 games. Their record is now 62-60 on the season. The struggling Sounds have lost 12 out of their last 13 games and their record is currently 55-66 on the season.
